Question in Movie-Making
Hey guys
Does anyone know how to split the screen in half and have different scenes in each half at the same time? Also, is it possible to have one clip and apply effects, like black and white, one one half of it only?
My skills are very basic, so I would appreciate any help or any recommendations for programs to use.
Thank you

Try Vegas Video Movie Maker, its been a long time since I last 'touched' the software so I'm not sure what is the latest version.
It allows you to add in multiple videos/clips together with specific size, add in some effects, and I think they properly splitted the video and audio into several different layers. That means you can add multiple sound or video layers to make your movie more 'messy' or not, depends how you display them.
I would recommend using multiple programs to back up each other's weaknesses, Vegas Video doesn't provide much effects so ya might consider using basics like Flash, Adobe After Effects, etc. You can add in the effects using adobe after effects for the specific clip, then export it as any video file Vegas Video supports (it should be able to support almost all types by now).
The interface is kinda user friendly, so I think you should be ok with Vegas Video.

You pretty much are looking at a couple of programs. One would be a movie editing program the other would probably be After Effects. I am sure AE would suit all your needs, but it is better to edit with an actual movie editing program then load up the edited film and add in all the effects you like including split screen video and colour filters.
AE = HUGE learning curve but there are tons of video tutorials on youtube and the web to explain most of what you need. If you have a good curiosity you'll learn about the stuff you need.
You could find one program to do all your stuff in but as LeonPayne said it's better to do the work in programs that are meant to do certain stuff.
I personally have used Adobe Priemeire 6.5 (which is very old), After Effects 6.5 as well... Umm Avid (which is what most studios work with) and a little bit of Vegas (which is disliked out of all of them).
Avid was the hardest to use and thus I stopped using it. Premiere was my favourite because there were lots of turtorials and stuff and you can kind of fumble your way through it. Some stuff I did in Windows Movie maker but it is a very finicky program and will crash randomly which means you lose all your work.
Also to note: If you are putting any music in your video, make sure it is uncompressed. While most suites will run with compressed audio (MP3) editors love working with uncompressed audio (WAV).
Wav's are huge in size though. A regular MP3 song of about 3MB or so will be about 40 MB WAV.
Other than that, good luck to you with your project!
edit:
Word to the wise, keep backups of stuff. If you are doign a big change or something make a new version of the file so you still have to original you worked from. While this will eat up your free space on your HDD it might save you headaches later on.
