PS3, which one?

I have been thinking of finally buying a PS3 and the Christmas sales sure make it more affordable, so I don't want to wait much longer. I've done some research but I am still not sure which one to get, so I thought of asking the experts Wink

It's important for me that it's compatible with PS and PS2 games, especially PS. Only the old ones are and they are no longer in production. So I know it will be more difficult to find one of these. The PS3 60GB is supposed to have better compatibility than the 80GB one. I can compromise 20GB since it's upgradeable. However, I read about some games or consoles being "region locked", so I won't be able to play all the old games on PS3. Can someone please elaborate on this point? If this "lock" creates a problem, like with playing old Final Fantasies, do you think I should just leave the compatibility feature aside and get one that has a higher capacity hard drive?

Thank you, I really appreciate your help.

I'm not sure where you would get the old ps2BCs, unless they brought them back or something, which I haven't heard of.

Region Locks have been around for a long time. All it means is that you can only play games produced for the same region that the system was. Meaning you can't play a Japanese game on an American console, or vice-versa. The most common regions, from what I know, are as follows:

NTSC-J which is Japan.
NTSC U/C which is North America.
PAL which is Europe/Oceania.
NTSC-C which is China.

No they didn't bring them back. I meant buying it online. It will be more difficult since I will have to "know" the seller or trust them. That's why I am having difficulty deciding between buying a used one with BC or a new one from a well-respected retailer.

Thanks for the region locks explanation. I always bought what I saw in front of me, so I never really questioned compatibility or locks before.

For region locking, the PS3 games have none, if I remember correctly. You could buy a PS3 games in Japan and play it on an "North American" PS3.

I do not know about region codes for the PS2 games.

I am surprised you can find an older "phat" ps3 system that has the PS2 backwards compatibility. I believe the 60GB one actually has the PS2 "emotion" chip inside of it, while the 80GB has some sort of software emulation.

From Wiki:
Like the South Korean and European models, the North American 80 GB (2007) model also excludes the PlayStation 2 "Emotion Engine" CPU chip. However, it retains the "Graphics Synthesizer" GPU. Due to the elimination of the "Emotion Engine", the level of compatibility was reduced.

You will probably want the early 20GB (no wifi) or the early 60 GB (has a card reader), since these have the PS2 chip inside the machine themselves.

Don't buy because of HDD space. You can purchase any 2.5inch HDD and upgrade you PS3 with it. Seeing as their are 500GB and possibly now 1TB 2.5inch drives space is only limited by your pocketbook. There are many videos on youtube that can show you how to do it. I would do it before playing games and whatnot as you have to either backup your saved data to USB or do a system backup and then a system restore (you'll need some kind of USB device to store the information on for the backup)

All PS3 can play original PS1 games.

Check out the "Model Comparison" in this wiki. You can see there are only 2 models that support hardware level emulation (which is better than software emulation) for PS2 games.

Hopes this helps and happy new year!

Thanks for posting that Mabus, I didn't have much time to post my first post so I didn't get much in.

I can confirm everything he said there. I own one of the old 60GB models with the emotion chip, and I've never run into a game that it has issues with. I've played through FF7, 8, 9, & 10, (among other games) multiple times, without any issues. So if your really concerned about BC, I'd say you can't go wrong with a model that has the emotion chip.

As Mabus said, all ps3s can run ps1 games, but I've heard some (unconfirmed) rumors that a lot of games have issues on the slims.

Thanks Mabus, that really helps!

The phat 60GB one would be ideal, but then I would be compromising reliability because I will have to buy it used. Since all PS3 versions play PS1 games; I think I will go ahead and buy one of the slim available ones.

I still have both my PS1 and PS2 consoles. Both of them still function, but I think soon they will become antiques, especially PS1 since I had it for over 11 years now lol. Sadly, the greatest games were on PS1, I was so young that I missed a lot of them and now most PS3 games are crap.

Anyways, thank you guys for your help, if you have any more comments please let me know. And happy new year to you too!

I wish I could have one console that could play all my PS games! I still need to beat a couple (Xenosaga 2 & 3).

For RPG's the PS3 is sorely lacking good ones with good story and heart behind it. FFXIII doesn't cut it for me, hopefully those Kingdom Heart guys take a better approach with versus XIII.

@Anubis

This is the first I heard of that but I am not surprised. Hopefully somehow we'll get some kind of software emulation for PS2 games in an update. But Sony doesn't seem like they care.

Which one do you have?

Yea, I have heard of the terrible reviews FFXIII has been receiving, but I am trying to stop fighting against everything and learn to love things for the way they are, so I am willing to go through the entire game and maybe even enjoy it.

Has any of you played Oblivion? I heard it's good, but haven't tried it yet. And for some reason I am excited about Call of Duty, so I have something in the background.

Funny you should actually mention Oblivion. I just bought it earlier today and all it's expansions on Steam (PC games). I look forward to trying it out. It's an not the typical jRPG, but it could be quite good. I really want to try out, Resonance of Fate by Sega... That is suppose to be good. The upcoming RPG titles are suppose to help out with the lack of good RPGs on the PS3 so I hope they get good reviews. I also bought Alpha Protocol but that is more FPS with RPG elements in it.

I loved Modern Warfare 2! Black Ops I am a little hesitant to put my weight behind. But I did get it for the PS3... Just I stopped playing it when I built my new computer.

I have the 120GB or 160GB slim model (lowest slim HDD space model) and I like it. I watch vids and play PS3 games. For Nostalgia, I play my ps2 and play ps1 games on my PSP.

FFXIII gets really good at chapter 11. So chapt. 1-10 is like a tutorial with heavy story... I just don't feel connected to the main characters of FFXIII. I feel more connected to the characters of FXII than XIII.... I haven't beat it yet but, my friend did say he liked the way XIII ended so I will have to beat it soon. I just like doing side quests.

I just found out the main director behind the FF series and lover of FFIX, is making a game called "The Last Story" with music from Nobuo Uematsu....

FF killer? I dunno, but it is only on the Wii.... Maybe thinking about getting a Wii for that game alone. Could be the story RPG I have been looking for from a next gen console. Seems story and heart get put on the back burner lately, which is sad.

So I got Final Fantasy XIII, but no console yet! I am entertaining myself with the instruction manual while I wait for my PS3 to arrive. I actually feel bad for being excited about it with all the terrible reviews lol.

I searched Resonance of Fate. It got some decent ratings. I think I will try this one and I hope the story will be as good as the flashy graphics the trailer shows. I never tried Black Ops, but I liked Modern Warfare 2 in the couple of times I tried it, I was terrible, but that's why I want to play it more.

Gaming companies are pure evil! If this game is really that good, I might have to move in with a friend who has a Wii. Well, the release date for Europe is not even announced yet, so I have time.

Thanks! Smile

Well that is good news to hear. Hope it comes soon. Oh and I think T-Rex made a PSN thread with a bunch of peoples PSN tags it in, in case you want to add anyone.

Cheers!

Oblivion is awesome...

I've got it on my 360 with all the content... and it is totally non-linear.... do what you want when you want...

People either love it or hate because it is so large & open....

I loved it... tired of the main quest? Spend a few days doing something else... it will be there whenever you want...

I hear what you are saying. I got it for the PC and tried it out, used a bunch of texture mods to make it look better and it is so open I feel overwhelmed... I mean most monsters kill me, but I not used to the Magicka system (chose to be more Magic oriented but also made heavy armor a specialization lol)

i have the 60gb ps3...and i have yet to find a single ps1, ps2, or ps3 game that does not play perfectly with it...

and also, im not sure if they still do, but gamestop usually had them refurbished with a warranty from sony. so that would be your safest bet. if they still offer it...

Is there ''one'' universal control remote that will work for a Sony bravia tv and a Play station 3?

My Sony bravia tv does not have the bravia sync feature so I’m looking for a remote control instead of buying two, one for the ps3 and one for the tv.
I need a remote control for the ps3 for when I watch bluray movies.
