PS3 Linux OS
this has been bothering me more and more.
how is sony going to make a Linux OS for the PS3 work? at first glace i have 2 thoughts about how they are going to do it.
1: They COULD take a preexisting linux and use that... but that would be inefficient and stupid as they would still have to code in the compatability (but would make all linux for the PC's able to use Cell processors in hopes of overtaking the x86 design)
2: They design their Own OS around the linux core for their console.
i think that #2 is probably going to be the way they are going to go.
but Linux is under the GNU which means that it HAS to be open source, so theoraticly when the PS3 comes out you can go in and see and tinker with the code of the PS3 OS.
Heres where i get confused.
it just cant work, i see people using the OS against itself to allow downloaded games to be played off of the Harddrive. with some recoding of the Linux OS. Sony would ofcourse lose a TON of money if playing illigal copys of games was that easy. so they HAVE to have some hardware inplace so that the OS cannot decide what is playable and what is not.
(hardware includes Blu-Ray and probably some chip on the mainboard)
if this is the case, then i can understand why they are going with Blu-Ray, it has much more advanced copy protection than any other disc format.
but hackers have ALWAYS gotten around these things. these companies dont ship their product if they dont think that there is a 100% chance that it wont be cracked. allowing the console able to play illigal games can kill a console, even faster if its extremely easy to do so. (ala dreamcast)
now to get back to the OS thing. I have researched this topic and recently i found a news post that said that the Linux OS in the PS3 will consume 15% of the total PS3 resources at all time, and 25% Power when at just the OS (one DSP processor out of 8 is dedicated to the OS, one extra is grabbed for the desktop, some odd 64mb ram is taken)
with that much power going to the OS. im expecting to see some massive features, like Internet Browser, Instant Messenger. etc etc.
the advantage i can see with going with linux is not preformace, that is already set in stone for the console (its not going to vary, to unlock that could make gaming unstable and be pointless.) but to rather add new features to it.
features like:
-Maybe having it be a Halflife 2 Game host at a LAN party (PC) while it wont play it (copy protection thing), it could host the game and reduce lag for all gamers.
-Website Hosting
-Voice Chat hosting
im just mentioning server hosting things here, but there are a ton of features, its basicly going to give it PC functionality.
So while the OS may take up alot of power, the features gained from it will give it some added functionality. and it will probably be the ONLY linux to ever have such a large library of games available.
thats what i got from the Linux announcement. its all a guess, it could be that they just took the Linux core and are NOT going to make it available for open source.

i guess this makes me excited about the PS3, the idea that it could help the transition of making Gaming on linux as easy as gaming on Windows. if the gaming community backed linux im POSITIVE that it would grow and become the window's killer that we want.

when you get to the top, you just thrive off of your success and can just pay somone to do all your work.
he dident get to the top via hard work, he got to the top by exploiting a need in the market.
frankly its a little sad almost, he says things, and his workers shoot him down remember that "Halo 3 will ship the same time as the PS3." and bungiee was like "Crazy old *"
hell the xbox was just his idea, its not even managed by him anymore, its actually a WHOLE different team than the guys working at windows (which would explain the good product and effort, rather than poorly designed crap)
hell his "richest man alive" wont last for a few more years, windows is selling less and less and microsoft stock is falling.
