Sony Delays PlayStation 3
Blu-ray forcing the machine into hiding until November.
by Patrick Klepek, 03/14/2006
Sony has been anything but talkative these past few months regarding their plans for PlayStation 3. No one except Sony seemed to anticipate they'd continue to meet their projected spring release date in any territory, even Japan.
Today, Sony officially conceded defeat to the recent flurry of rumors and speculation, with Japanese newspaper Nihon Keizai Shimbun reporting the machine has been pushed back until November.
There aren't many details out right now, but Sony says issues over the finalization of copy protection technology related to their Blu-ray disc drive is the cause of the delay.
When asked for a comment, a Sony Computer Entertainment America spokesperson only went on record saying that SCEI has not issued any official statement itself yet.
As the news is coming out of Japan, that creates a worrisome scenario for America and Europe. There were already rumblings Sony wouldn't be able to launch in all territories before the end of the year, but missing out on the Christmas season over here could prove a deadly blow to Sony's next-generation plans.
Somewhere in Microsoft's offices, Bill Gates just opened a bottle of champagne. With more details expected at tomorrow's PlayStation conference and the Game Developers Conference just around the corner, it appears the flood gates (for good or ill) are about to be unleashed. |
i have mixed feelings about this.

Yup I have been keeping up with this and not surprised by a delay. There hasn't been any new information and the games are far from being ready. I have to admit I am not all that excited about the PS3 anymore, but I will still get one. They are trying to use the Playstation's fame and success to pimp the blu ray media format. I remember the days when consoles just played games, and phones were used to talk. Now you have equipment that has cheap and unreliable parts thrown in to be "cool" which sacrifices performance.
However when the new Square-Enix games are released for the PS3 then we will be truly in the next gen and I will buy it for that reason alone

i agree with you. but last i heard that Sony and NEC created a Joint company so that means that they are open to the HD-DvD.
This news doesnt supprise me, infact i was expecting it, it's just like sony to tell everyone that their coolest new toy is coming out VERY soon, and then just when its about to arrive, shove it back a few months.
Why would they do that? marketing, if people think that an alternative to the 360 is coming out soon, they will hold off and see which one they want to get when it comes out. while microsoft is Having Awful problems of their own (<-- is 100% true, i downloaded that patch and its crashed 2 times now. hopefuly a new patch will come out to fix it, im thankful its a software glitch.)
I myself probably wont get a PS3 until about 4 years into it, even then its a big 'if' i was never too big into the PS2 games (the ones i did enjoy were the original creative ones, if i still had my PS2 i probably would have enjoyed "Shadow of the Collosus" and "Gutar Hero" and bought no other games.)
Ive gotten myself to not 'hate' the Playstation brand of shifting me out of almost $1000 to play a few games. ive moved that hate to its proper place. Sony. the Playstation is more of a representive of the games it plays, while sony is just a company run by idiot monkies who cant really do anything innovative. i swear the whole company is full of marketing, they watch the emerging trends, take the ideas, and then claim it as their own.
to get back on topic
This news while MIGHT be interprited as bad news, is actually Excelent news for sony. If they shipped this early they could only have a 2x Blu-Ray drive, which is 1/2 as slow a read speed as DvD 12x.
By fall they should hopefuly have a 4x (about the same read speed) or maybe even an 8x (dont pray too hard for 8x though)
And with 50gb dual layer discs. you will obviosly need a faster read speed, not a slower one.
