The launch details are:
Japan on November 11th
20GB - 59,800 yen
60GB - open price (retailers will set it)
US on November 17th
20GB - $499 US
60GB - $599 US
Europe on November 17th
20GB - 499 Euros (£340 based on current exchange rates)
60GB - 599 Euros (£410 based on current exchange rates)
Australia on November 17th (prices quoted directly fron Sony Australia)
20GB - $829 AUD
60GB - $999 AUD
There's approximately a 20% increase in price (based on current exchange rates) between the US and European prices. Australasia was included with the European pricing, so it would be reasonable to expect that we will be in the higher price band.
Interestingly (if these release dates stand) while Japan will receive the console first, thanks to the time difference the PS3 will launch in Australian before Europe and America (  )

Still, that sucks. We are totally getting ripped off in Aus here, either that or America is getting a major sale. Either way the current monetary conversions don't add up.
Edit again:
More huge news is that Sony's controller wiill actually have motion-sensing gyroscopes inside the controller that will detect tilting as well as raising and lowering. lol And the controller's design has chaged. It now looks pretty much identical to the current PS2 controller (thank god)

$500? That's insane. I don't see how they can move a product with that price on it. I just got a new PC, almost top of the line, for less than that. Seriously, if any system came out at that price 4 years ago it would have been an instant failure just because of the price (like, say, the NeoGeo).
I know I won't be buying one for a few years, until the price drops much lower.

hrmm $499+ (the other price is $599, not $549)
i think some MORE guys owe me money (especially for getting the + part right)
i got the november release and price down. man i should have made more than $5 bets...
i DID hear about how the new CPU on the 360 will lower its price by about $100 premium, and $80 core, so it would be $300/$220 compared to $500/$599, then you consiter that the 360 HDD will be going down soon (if some damn 3rd partys start MAKING HDD's already...)
i do find it interesting that the 360 will be using a smaller laptop sized harddrive, while the PS3 will most likely be using a standard sized harddrive, which should be cheeper and larger. but unfortunately since it will be internal will limit the upgrade capabilities (at 60gb dont expect to download full PS3 games like i think i heard one fanboy say. most likely the downloadable content will be similar to what Xbox has.. so a Playstation Arcade if you will...)
this price is well fitting. its not outrageous (like the $700 price tag we hear sometimes) as well as it still rings true to the *its going to cost you up the butt to play still* by the sony Executive.

ill tell you what the chart lists differently:
the cheep version will miss out on:
Memory Stick/SD/Compact Flash compatability
Built In Wireless B/G
HDMI Connector (No dual screen functionality, its also used for 1080p connectivity)
so if you want that stuff, including the 60gb harddrive, better get the $599 version as i doubt it will be upgradable.
One thing i think needs noting:
BD2 x2 Read speed.
this x2 read speed is probably the one thing that is going to suck the most.... you have your MASSIVE disc size, but if you read before, to compare with the 360's 12x DvD read speed, the Blu-Ray needs to achieve at LEAST a 4x read speed,
this means longer loading times. becuase it can read only half as fast as the 360. (even though it can store whatever times more data)
The loading times may be saved by cacheing data to the HDD. but that only helps after the initial loading time. you could load up a disc and it would take quite some time for a new area to load up, but then when you press "Restart" and are teleported to a map back, it will load quickly.

no they arent, the motion sensing is a feature that PS3 exclusive games will use, and which will be rare (though most racing and piloting games i can see using it)
the functionality of the PS3 controller motion sensing isint even CLOSE to the ability of the Wii's remote.
plus to get that motion sensing in games, they are removing the rumble feature from the controllers, so sony is out of the rumble game (for a feature that most likely wont be used.)
on the bright side.... the controller should have a long battery life without the rumble feature.

only on the $600 model.
and its most likely not going to be upgradable.
if i get a PS3, its GOT to have wifi built in, hell if i want to play the PS3 on a 1080p TV you have to buy the $600 model.
its strange... sony is taking over a $300 loss per console sold, thats enough that they could have GIVEN away the PS2 at launch to everyone who wanted one. and the console is STILL $500/$600
not to mention games will be $70-$80 each, which will make the rentals for the games higher (they raised it)
and yah im going to get a Wii myself, it looks cool and worthy of being on my entertainment system.

I agree with what Thoul said. All electronics are expensive today that wouldn't have even sold well in the past. I remember a few years back a $600 TV was too expensive, now a $1500 HDTV is considered a good price. I have always wondered when the gaming industry was going to be on a downfall, and I believe things are going downhill now.
If it offered the same memorable experiences and gameplay that made you forget about the real world like the consoles in the past, then maybe it would be worth it. However all I see now are rushed games (besides SE games they take forever to come out) and hyped graphics. I will probably get a PS3 when the next FF game comes out for it. My PC is very powerful and is keeping me entertained for now. Especially since there are so many PC ports going to consoles now.
I guess the next consoles will be $699 minimum price. Let's not forget that you still have to buy the games and other accessories which tack on a few hundred dollars.

SE can be counted in the rushed games category. Grandia III is absolutely the most unfinished console game I've ever played. It hurt to see how many storylines and plot points were started in the game and then left dangling.

Down here consoles always debut with a crazy price. I remember so many people complaining about the Xbox which debuted in 2002 for $650 when at the time the PS2 was around $500.
I can't see anyone buying the 60GB PS3 here, that means you'll pay over $1000 for a console and a game.

i'd probably get the $600 myself.
mainly becuase:
1: I plan on getting a 1080p TV
2: I Have a WiFi Network and it will be just easier to use that rather than run a cable to the console
3: im a Demo Downloading *... ill need that 60gb of space.
but thats only if i follow my own guidelines for buying consoles:
1: it has to have at least 5 games i want on it
2: it has to have at least 5 future titles i want to play on it
