Possibly no disc drive for the Playstation 4
source: http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=3664

When it comes to disc technology in the next-generation console market, Sony is making a Blu-ray drive standard on both the $499 and $599 versions of its PS3, whereas Microsoft has decided to play it safe by using traditional DVD-9 media with its XBOX 360. While many like to point to a “Blu-ray vs HD DVD” battle in the console arena, one must take into account that no XBOX 360 games will use HD DVD media and the HD DVD drive will be an optional, external USB unit aimed at playing back high-definition movies. Microsoft has also stated that it has no plans to offer an XBOX 360 with an integrated HD DVD drive. With that being said, even though Sony's PlayStation 3 has yet to hit store shelves, Sony is already talking about its successor. Sony's Phil Harrison believes that the PlayStation 4 will forgo discs altogether.
With the rising popularity of using an online marketplace to download games, additional game content, demos and movie trailers, many are questioning the need for physical media in the future. “I’d be amazed if the PlayStation 4 has a physical disc drive,” said Harrison to Wired Magazine. While the market may not be quite to the point where a 100% digital distribution model would be feasible for console gamers, it may be ripe for the picking when the PlayStation 4 is released.
Looking at the PS2, it has been on the market for 6 years. Both NVIDIA and Sony have stated that the PS3 will have a shelf life of 10 years -- that pushes us to 2016 for PS4. Perhaps by 2016, large-scale digital distribution of game and movie content and high-speed Internet connections will be at a point where such a model would be feasible for a home console. |
To be honest I am not a huge fan of the idea of downloading large movies and games. Reason being that there are a lot of times when I need to download a game patch or demo on my PC and the only site that offers a download has an extremly slow connection. Sometimes they offer mirrors for downloads but not all of the time, and even then all of the mirrors are slow and filled with spam.

Fun, mostlikely it will be like what the 360 is doing via patches..
they download off of microsofts servers and.....
ohyah, they cant do that its a free online gaming platform....
i like the idea though of downloading games rather than have them be on a disc, not only does this make it easier to play games, it kills loading times, and reduces a part that sony just cant make right (Disc drive)
and the math is off a bit on that on when the PS4 will be released, while yes, it might last 10 years, so did the PS1, and the PS2 was LONNG out before the end of the PS1's 10 years, thus it could be around 2012 when we see the PS4.
kudos to sony though for thinking outside of the box finally, a console without a disc drive would be takign what is so popular now, and turning it into a fullblown console.. i mean yah, the 360 is doing it now.. but thats only for arcade games and not full-blown console games, thus it would give sony that edge on creativity that they have been so asking for.

I wonder if sony could make a believer out of you Thor! They are not as "evil" as you think and Microsoft is just as "evil" or more so than you think. Maybe even more than Sony, but Nintendo is the least evil out of them all.
"Evil" being a subjective term.

Yeah, I know it just sucks when I really want to play a new game and then Comcast goes offline for 5 hours due to an unexplained problem with their connection.

sony could make a believer out of me when they:
1: stop lying to us
2: stop using crappy hardware that will only make sony alot of money that has only theoretical preformance increases rather than hardproven preformance increases.
3: start focusing on the gamers rather than the advertising.
on microsofts front, i never once said that they werent evil, microsoft on the other hand does have some actual proven evidence that they are consumer oriented rather than than the cold pushers that they once were.
Vista, the biggest Hunk of garbage i can think of to come out of Microsoft.. i hated the idea of it from the begining.. but it has 2 features in it that make it a Must-Own (i thought there was 3.. but i guess not, still #2 is really the biggest reason)
1: Voice commands, you can actually controll EVERYTHING with just your voice, it may be a bit hard to play a game, but it is possible.
2: DirectX10, this version of directX is built from the ground up for increased preformance, and the features of DX10 include Improved Handling of procedural Generation and Physics Support. overall DX10 is the next-generation of video game graphics.
Sony on the other hand i have had many troubles, time and time again.
Their comptuers that i sell.. they are by-far have the worst Bang/Buck combo, but their selling point is: "We are sony, buy our name" and style.. Sony is the Nike of Comptuers.. a joke, a company that charges you extra just for the brand name.
they DO on the other hand, make an AMAZING monitor and TV. they are a little bit more, but ive seen the image quality, and lifespan and it makes me wonder how they can be so good on TV/Monitors and suck so much on virtually everything else.
if the PS3 was made with the same quality and grace as their TV's... then there would be no problems, and it would still be that vision of excelence and awesomeness that it had when it was first announced.

** Back on the note of vista, for every cool thing about it, there are 2 evil things... for instance, there is 6 versions of it.
Basic (crappy, no internet or network, 3 applications at a time)
Home Basic (Like WinXP Home, but without the Aero Theme and more focused on casual use... probably the best choice for a college student who only surfs the web and writes papers.)
Home Professional (Includes the Aero Theme, Windows media player, Windows Media Center, this is going to be the version installed on any computer that you buy in a store. it is also going to be most likely the best selling version of Vista)
Then there is the Corporate Line;
Small business Vista (Gets rid of the media center functionallity, gets rid of anything that would be used as "fun", and then includes new features that are built around businesses, such as Domains, Workgroups, Dynamic file folder sharing, Virtual Private Networks, etc etc, nothing that a home user would ever need)
Corporate Vista (like Small business, but includes the functionality of a Domain Login system, such as where you can access your files and folders and account from any comptuer in a work place, also includes server administration funcitons, also includes Remote Management and again, a more advanced feature set of Vista for much larger businesses)
Then there is the biggest version:
Ultimate Vista
This verison includes EVERY FEATURE of the previous versions, and then addes some more, such as the Dynamic Preformance Monitor, which adjusts your computer for improved Framerates and video quality IN GAMES.
unfortuantely Vista Ultimate is looking to be almost $400.. and it will be the version of choice for gamers.
also note that with vista WGA has changed, if you dont know what it is, it is the anti-Copy protection on windows. basicly, rather when it finds out that the version isint a licenced version. it locks all feature sets and makes the copy of Vista run exactly like it would in the Basic, but plus Internet and programs.
vista's pricing scheme is quite evil in itself.
i would skip it altogether if it werent for DirectX 10... man that looks awesome. almost 75% increase in preformance over DX9. and if you have a DX10 card... whooo thats going to be fun =)

im thinking the oposite and not so of what funender thinks (confusing kuu?)
well um they must be thinking what conections will be like in 2016 in europe and jp, here they r not so fast... so yhea i dont simphatise with the idea since its not thought has in worldwide...
still just like they said, games size and ev else is becoming smaller and smaller, and faster. maybe by 16 this might be posible, its 9-10 years, who knows what the future holds, right?
(i say it wont but its posible)
