playing and singing

Hey, does anyone have any tips on playing and singing at the same time?

I can do it on certain songs by the ramones where the singing and the guitar have stuff in common like:

She talks to rainbows
Now I wanna sniff some glue
I wanna be your boyfriend
The KKK took my baby away
Beat on the brat
Pinhead

etc.

But I am learning Hurt by johnny cash and I want to sing and play at the same time, Do you guys have any tips?

I used to find this really hard and i think it's one of the hardest things to begin with...

well if i ever get stuck and can't do both then i shut my eyes, begin playing, i might play first verse round through and then sing and try to forget im playing guitar...

i hope that made sense?

thats work always works for me

the only song i can't do both at once is more than words by extreme... i'll learn soon XD

basically practice playing guyitar until you can do it without thinking and then try singing

another good option is to pick a song where the guitar line and singing have the same rhythm like many iron maiden songs

can you recommend one please?

all I know is that ramones songs are easy because I basically mastered power chords and the guitar is simple. and if you take cretin hop for example, the power chord does not change till the line of the verse is done. Same with blitzkrieg Bop.

well with iron maiden it depends, you can just play rhythm and it's quite easy i would reccomend 'the trooper' anyway cos in the beginning the vocals and guitar lick alternate and then from the rest of the song you only play one chord over the vocals in the verses, this is what i played when i was doing bass and singing at the same time

or possibly 'run to the hills' as the rhythm of the chord progression and the vocal rhythm are the same in the verse and the chorus has quite a simple chord progression that's easy to sing over

then when you get better you can start playing the guitar solos as well which are quite challenging but sound frickin awesome
