Pen and paper rpg?
Anyone here play them? I know i'd like to. I played them a bit in the past, and i'm trying to get my friends together to start again. I know it' s a bit of a thing of the past, but I just wanted to see if anyone here still has interest in them? If so, what do you guys play?

Yes, thats exactly it. There are many other games and companies along with game formats, but that is one of the major games. Have you played D&D?

I tried to play them. Trying to make one of my own. Don't have a name for it yet. I started making one of the maps for it on SketchUp, but... it was too detailed and my comp. started to mess up, so i had to delete it >.<

Nice, me and a friend of mine were working on one with a customized system. What kind of game system were you using?

i think they are planning on trying to make playing over the internet possible, like a group chat with the DM and probably electronic die to stop cheating lol

Yeah, they just put out the fourth.
And I have been trying to figure out a way to do it in some sort of chat room situation. THe only problem is the honor system with the dice. If anything, I was thinking the GM could handle the dice management. I just haven't found anyone willing to play.

Same here, I only use my computer at work so that really limits my time lol. If I had to pick a time, it would have to be on the weekends.

I was working on it. It was completely custom because anyone who knew anything about D&D left, and me being a new pen and paper rpg addict, that didn't bode well, so I became the GM of a shortly lived, very crude rpg. The next one will be better. There were few limits, and the combat system was flawed. Everything died easy, making it very, very difficult for player characters to stay alive without my intervention. It was mainly luck, complete luck, if someone stayed alive. But if they stayed alive, it looked like there was no worries at all, that is because if the player didn't die easy the enemy did. When I get a jump drive or some other storage device, I may start on it again, but unless I can make the maps that way, I am not making them because my drawing sucks.

you could make a dice rolling program. I have seen a few on the internet (Mechquest) and if you can make some with D-20s D-10s, D- whatevers, and insert them in your post, but then you would have to have a special script so that only the user that it pertains to can click on it but I DO suggest that it would be a forum thing, not a chat thing, because people might chat OOC so much that people lost track of what was happening.

i am a huge D&D player.
and i do play D&D over the internet, but chatroom is not adiquate to handle gameplay. you need to do it on an IRC server.
we play through IRC and the DM handles all the rolls, letting the gamers know what their rolls were (and somtimes not telling) you can IM individual people for seperate and secret actions. and have them roll from there.
there are some major advantages to doing it this way over doing it at a table:
-When casting a spell, the other players have no way of knowing what it is until the mage tells them or they succeed a spellcraft check (arcane check in 4e) using IRC the player just says that he is casting a spell and that the group should trust him (if hes stupid enough to tell the group what spell he is casting, the enemy will have heard him and will probably start running or setting up proper defenses)
-You can have nice supprises that one character finds out about and the rest are in the dark about. for example say the rogue who is sneaking about at the edge of the enemy camp, but as he looks to his hiding groupmates farther away in the safety of the underbrush, he sees another hiding figure behind them, the group doesnt know about the figure, but the rogue does, so he has to choose to compromise his own safety and stealth to save the group, or hope that they can handle whatever he is on their own.
somtimes not knowing the dice roll can be advantageous, it gives the DM a way to make the battle and gameplay more immersive. rather than thinking "Man, i was just 1 off from hitting" or "I roll a LOT of 5's!" they will be thinking "OHH my sword was really close that time, almost got him" and "Whoohoo i hit the *!"
not letting your players know things can really help with the immersion. not telling them how much damage they did, but rather telling them how hurt the enemy looks adds a sense of immersion.
