pc help
dont knwo if ive ever made a help thread before
....but i will never make a series one XD
anyway heres my trouble
about a week ago my desktop decided it would ...not turn on anymore (james-.-)
wouldnt turn on at all
all of the components except MB has been checked
got a new PSU cos my one crapped out
so i assumed it was only that
im not gonna post the specs of my comp right now cos to be honest i would have to go open my comp and take all the parts out to see them it is an old comp and it is packed, i just finishedputting it back together so maybe later.
well anyway
i put int he new psu
plugged everything back in (i had to take literally everything but RAM out to get it in there i dont know why it was set up this way its rediculpus especially considering PSU crapping out isnt an uncommon problem
i know where evrything goes
i assume so at least i have done it many times
but , well i have done stupid things before like forgetting to plug one thing in etc. (not on building comps but stuff in generalXD)(not really building this one just putting it back together and putting a psu in so i know everything is compatable including the psu))
so if anyone has any troubleshooting tips for me anything i can try to check the thing that would be aces.
right now i have no way of checking the new PSU is fully working, i just have to assume it does.
im not paying for a tester for it, and i have no clue how to check the mobo is working without the comp getting any power whatsoever.
be as technical as you like, use big words, use actual part names, ill understand so dont worry about dumbing it down into a long post XD
im looking at you mabus and thory who isnt here! XD
probably didnt help with that long ass infoless psot but any help is appreciated, failing this ill have to wait some time to try the psu and mobo
but like i said im not getting any power whatsoever
and before you ask, i have plugged in the 24pin and 4 pin atx power cables XD
i only have one thing left to try i know off and ill do that later cos im done with this for now/endrant?XD

Okay so the basics of trouble shooting are this pretty much.
Also blatantly say what your symptoms are. I think you may have said it just doesn't get any power from the new PS?
1. Strip it down to the most basic of parts.
The ones you need to actually get a POST.
These are: Motherboard, RAM, CPU, Power Supply and if you don't have on board video, a video card.
Okay, now if you plug it in and the machine starts, that is good! If there is no beeps (some motherboards don't beep anyway...) and no video something is wrong.
Note: If it does start with the basics, make sure your not overloading your Power supply with too many peripherials (CD-ROMS/HDDs/FDD). Also put as many things of different "Strands" of power connectors as possible. Make sure no screws cam out and are shorting the MOBO they can easily slip under the MOBO....
2. Isolate anything you can.
[CABLES]
Make sure you try known working cables. This could be VGA cables, Power cables, ribbon cables, sata cables (probably too know for your machine).
[RAM]
Try starting without the RAM in, if your motherboard does beep it should now be doing a series of beeps (I think it is just 1 long beep repeated). This means that is knows there is no RAM in.
Insert the RAM again, making sure you line up the guide pins in the slots to the little notches of the RAM.
Push firmly enough that the clips pop back into position. If you have to push really hard, take out the RAM and re-insert it. You should have to push too hard to get the clips to pop.
Next look at your video card, if you have it. Make sure that it is seated correctly. Take it out and leave it out. If there is no onboard video, you should get a error of I believe 1 long beep and 3 short. These beeps can differ from BIOS to BIOS. Any beeps that are different from ones you hear when it is plugged in are good!
If you get the beeps put it back in making sure it is seated correctly and don't push too hard. Almost everything can be inserted without the need to push hard.
[POWER SUPPLY]
If you power supply is not turing on, make sure you've flipped the switch at the back to the correct position.
O = No power to the machine
-- = Power to the machine.
Also while back there make sure if you have the little red slide switch it is set to your voltage level (240 for Britain right? 150 for NA)
If you have the switch flipped correctly but it still won't turn on you can try this AT YOUR OWN RISK:
Take a paperclip and while the power supply is off (MAKE SURE IT IS OFF!) insert one end into the hole that the GREEN <--- GREEN! wire connects to. There should only be 1 GREEN wire. Take the other side and put it into the any hole that connects to a BLACK wire. BLACK = Ground, GREEN = Power Switch.
While the 2 holes are connected either flip the power switch or plug in the supply. (DON'T HAVE ANYTHING PLUGGED IN. Unless you want to see if your CD-ROM and HDD power up. But do not plug them in while the PS is running... plug them in before hand).
Now I've done this a couple times, but DO AT OWN RISK. The fan on the power supply should turn on once you get electricity flowing through it. If it does, your PS is more than likely good.
[CPU]
Well this is the bish part. If your motherboard is meant for an AMD CPU, try plugging in speakers if you get no video but it powers on. Sometimes the computer will tell you what is wrong, (NO CPU DETECTED) means that your CPU came unlodged or something and you'll need to reseat it... Which means you should also re-thermal paste it if the paste is dry.
[MOBO]
No easy way to tell if the MOBO is fried. If your PS went it can take out a bunch of things with it. The easiest way to tell if you MOBO is borked, look at all the capacitors. If any of them have tops that are bulged out, it coukld mean your caps have blown and you MOBO is fcuked!
If your mobo has lights on the inside, most of the time they should have a green light or two somewhere and they don't turn on, that is another sign.
If make sure you CPU fan is plugged into the right power connector. Make sure everything is plugged into the right connector. Make sure your 4 PIN connector is attached to the MOBO... Sometimes you don't need to do this as I believe the 4 pin was brought around for P4's... Not too sure. Best to find your MOBO manual online.
You want to check the MOBO last, because if it is the MOBO your SOL.
Most of the time you should try re-seating EVERYTHING a couple times to rule that out at the end. Or try spare parts you have. Then at the end of the day, if it doesn't work, call it the MOBO or PS again and replace. If you just bought your PS you should still have a warranty on it.

tried pretty much all there that apllies, ill have to test the psu on soemwhere else if it isnt that then it probably is the mobo, which sucks, a lot, though i know the mobo was fine when i took oout the last psu, which even had physical signs of being * XD
just wanted to make sure i wasnt skipping somehting obvious >.<
ill probably run through all the steps you posted just to make sure i dont skip anything when i feel like it, but having done it a few times i cant be bothered XD
thanks for the reply, and the detail
and youre right
no sata cables too old XD
and my mobo doesnt have any lights, which pissed me off when i plugged the psu in and was lookin for them XD
thanks ^^

With just the PS supply plugged in and the MOBO/CPU does the PS turn on? Check that out when you strip it down.
