PC Cooling question
i have a few questions, my pc is getting kinda old with its aging 2 year parts. the warranty is gone and im on the verge of buying a new computer. but rather i think i would like to save my money until the next generation of PC parts comes out (ala the GeForce 8800, you know thats next)
so ive been overclocking my Videocard and im going to begin overclocking my CPU when i get home.
now ive read gudes on how to overclock, how to overclock an AMD, and how to overclock an AMD 64 3400+, ive also read guides on how to overclock a video card, and how to overclock MY video card.
my BIG question is, what is the most effective cooling method. there are fans to blow hot air out, and fans to blow cold air in. and im baffled on how to set this up to make it work.
do the fans that blow air out are they placed on the top where hot air rises? or do you blow air in from the top to cool the air of the whole case as the cold air decends?
do i have my additional PCI fan that will add cooling to my Video card do i have it blow on the Video card, or suck air off of the video card.
i know that motion of air causes evaporation and makes it colder, so do i make that PCI fan blow on the video card?
ive also been looking for a website to compare CPU fans, i want to see if i can find a more efficient fan that is quiter for my CPU.
i figure the best time to overclock is in the late spring/early summer, that way it will only get colder and i will have set my ststem to a safe stable level for hot weather.
im not going to go crazy overclocking, but at most a 5%-10% increase at most, i want the comptuer to last me another year before i replace the Motherboard, Video card, and CPU with new parts. if and when i need them.
so any help with the physics of PC Case cooling will be greatly appriciaited.

Liquid cooling is the way to go I heard. A water tower like object (this is just one of many different types) sits outside your computer and pumps water (or anitfreeze or pure alcohol [since it absorns heat]) and these little , I call them "patch/fan things" go where your fans used to be (i.e. CPU and GPU) suppose to work really well, except sometime water corrodes the motor in the water tower thing and alcohol evaporates. The antifreeze (pure or diluted) is suppose to be the best!
Just my thoughts

yaaah, watercooling is kinda out of my price range. its definately the way to go if you overclock i hear, but just too costly for what im planning.

I have Thermaltake watercooling installed on 3 different computers. Been using it for years with no problems. I would recommend that you save up for it if you cannot afford it now, since it is worth the purchase. Some overclocking geeks say that they rather use 10 extremely loud 150 DB fans to make their computer sound like a vacuum cleaner, but I like to have the coolest temps at the least amount of sound. The new hardware that you listed will not be much hotter than an AMD 3000+ single core. My AMD 3800 Dual cores run no higher then 36C at full load. My Geforce 7900 card stays at 55C with no problems.

damn you and your awesome video card. lol
thanks for the advice, it DO want it quiet as my computer is in my bedroom. i guess a reason i never consitered water cooling is because i just dont know how it works, what happens if it leaks? how does it keep the parts cool?

water has the sweet property of absobing heat without radically changing its temperature and instead stores it, and since it is flowing water, it as mixed constantly (i think thats how it would work). have you ever heard of a river that has "hot" rapids? lol

Basically what seifer said, and if you use ethyl alcohol it absorbs so much more heat but ethyl alcohol evapourates so you need to refill it.

Yeah before I got it I had no idea how it would work without getting the computer parts wet, but once you see it you will understand. It looks and works exactly like a car radiator. You have the container that stores the water, that links to the pump, then the pump goes to the radiator, to the CPU block, and the heated water exits back to the pump's intake. The whole assembly is sealed, it isn't like water pours on the CPU. The CPU block is basically a hollow heatsink that contains the water and is completely sealed. You do not have to worry about leaks, heck it is even a pain just trying to get the tubes to come off once they are on there, so there is no worry. I did have a leak once because I didn't check all of the tubes and the water just dripped down to the bottom of the case without touching anything electrically charged anyway.

i looked at some watercooling options yesterday, they cost a TON.
$100+ and there are different variations, how do i know which kind to get for my computer? whats the difference between teh $100 one and the $200 one?
