Ordered my new PC today
Not spent so much money in ages, I dont know whether to laugh or cry haha. anyway here's what i got
CPU: 3GHz Core 2 Duo
RAM: 2GB Corsair PC8500
MB: Asus P5K Premium, Intel P35 chipset
HDD: Western Digital Raptor X, 150GB 100000000000rpm
GPU: XFX 8800GTS 320MB
also got a Case, PSU, DVD writer, and a new keyboard.
I paid £850 after buying the bits from 4 different places to get the best deal.
I'm gonna stick with WinXP for now. Out of curiousity has anyone tried the leaked beta version of SP3?

i have not tried SP3, then again anything having to do with Microsoft and beta just doesn't sound good to me.
nice system, you will play some beefy games on that rig.

Cool setup bud Yeah XP is the best OS at the moment anyway and I do not plan to upgrade that software in a long time. Do you plan to get another Raptor in the future and run a RAID0? I check Newegg.com almost every day to see what type of new hardware they have, and it is still the same so I am waiting for the next series of AMD processors to come around before I upgrade again. The speed of today's computers still do not impress me, I want to be able to open up any program in less than a second. The harddrives are the bottleneck, when the heck are they going to replace that technology.

yeah the problem with hard drives is that their performance is very dependent on a lot of mechanics, for example the physical movement of the disk heads from one location to another. they can only speed up that process so much, regardless of how fast they can make the bus. so i think they'd have to completely come up with something far less mechanical. i heard about magnetic ram a few years ago, but i dont know if that would be feasible in such large amounts.
yeah in the future i may get another raptor for raid0, but since a 150GB raptor is more expensive than a 750GB non-raptor i dont think it will be very soon.

Oye, i know harddrives are a sticky issue,
i find that i rather just get a ton of Ram and let that cache all my games so the harddrive throughput isint too big of an issue.
honestly a raid 0 of alot of things is great for the average desktop user.

the only thing i've found that vista has going for itself is the readyboost feature. its kinda nice to be able to slap a 4gig flash drive in and gain some ram. i hope SP3 has an option to enable some sort of ready boost

My computer died a couple months ago (never buy a Dell), and we got this new computer once we heard our hard drive was fried and the computer was a goner. We have Vista now, and it's pretty good. A few too many safety features though.

You're right FuN. The computers these days are too slow. It seemed for a long time that I was the only person who though that.
