Opinion on Paulo Coelho

hi everyone!

first of all, i'm gonna say i'm not a hardcore supporter of Paulo Coelho, i've read two of his books and well...i liked them. i'll probably not read them again, but i think they were ok

i had to write a report on a book or novel i had read, and since i was reading his novel The Zahir, i wrote on that...and i got something like this from the lecturer

"Your paper's good but I though you liked a different kind of author"

i could've asked him what was wrong with reading Coelho, but...well i was in a hurry to leave XD so i didn't...if you have read his work or have heard reviews, could you tell me what you think the lecturer meant? or what kind of author he could've thought i liked? coz well...i don't a favorite one...i read the abstract on the back of the books and if i like it, i buy it XD

it's not like it's that important, i just don't know why he wrote that XD

thanks for your time!

I don't know this author but read up about him. Apparently he likes pirating his own books. I'll have to check one out and see.

As for your prof, maybe you give off a different attitude than one who would be interested in this author would? Like bubbly or full of life and the writing is macabre?

Maybe it's advanced reading that the prof didn't think anyone would be interested in or something like that. That is definitely something you should think about. How does the prof see you on a day to day basis or what sort of writing did you do or reading did you do?

Go back and ask him!

Maybe it's not that there is something wrong with reading Coelho, but there is something strange about 'you' reading and reviewing his work because you tend to prefer different style or different genre? I assume your teacher knows you well from previous assignments, so he was surprised with your choice, if this is the case then what he said could be a compliment stating that you are well-rounded and writing about things you don't necessarily agree with?

Or it's what Mabus said, if it's not the same as I said lol

I did read a couple of his books few years back, I really enjoyed them and they inspired me at that point of my life; The Alchemist and Eleven Minutes. From what I remember, there is always more than what meets the eyes in his writing, like I had to read some parts few times until some kind of realization hit me. In both works there were two types of journeys which the main character took, one is the physical adventures and the other is an inner one about being lost and found again by oneself and accomplishing some sort of self satisfaction, it doesn't have to be taken literally all the time but it leaves you with a feel of contentment. But I am confused as to why you're asking about the writer as you seem to know him fairly well and you did write a paper, so again maybe he means that it's a surprise that you're reading him or something... I don't know... go back and ask him lol

i've read the alchemist too ^^ and i liked it as well XD i don't know about the pirating, but a friend did mention that he had two books that were exactly the same story, the alchemist and another one. but i haven't read the other one, nor can i remember the name XD so meh

it's the first time i take one of his lectures, that's why it threw me XD

maybe i should indeed go ask him what he meant, i just couldn't atm XD

I don't think Eleven Minutes is the book your friend was talking about. I should have probably mentioned that they have different stories, yet kind of similar. Eleven Minutes is about virtue, prostitution, and love. Lots of sex also, probably wasn't suitable for me to read back then lol, but yea I don't think any of these were in The Alchemist. It's the writer's style to write about these very personal journeys in the middle of a "physical" thing. It's hard for me to explain the book without giving so much away, because the experience of finding out the importance of these things is what gives it its most value.

Anyways, yea go and ask him and let us know! Smile

So what happened? Did the prof tell you why he made that comment?

As for the pirating, look on his wiki. It shows that his publishing house found copies of his manuscripts online, with notes that only he could have made in them.

Supposedly they stuck a deal and one book is released for free every so often.

He accredits a unauthorized Russian translation of his book for getting his sales from around 3000 books to millions of books, without any sort of advertising spent on them. That is why he pirates his books... or so the non primary source wiki says.

I 'think' I would give it 6/10 based on my current standards (9 being the highest mark lol), so I would recommend it if this number is enough for you to read a book.

Yessss! I will read it sometime soon, I don't know why I stopped reading his books, I quite liked them Confused

EDIT: Maybe 5/10...
