Onemanga, the soon-to-be dearly departed.
There isn't really a "manga" section, so i decided that anime was close enough.
For those of you who don't know, there's something called Scanlations. That's when people who can read japanese/korean/chinese/any language really, finds manga from other countries that's not available in english, and translates it. Then, the translators hand off the words and the manga to scanners, who then scan the pages, and digitally replace the foreign text with english ones. This, in effect, lets a LOT of manga, that otherwise would be unreadable to us americans, be readable. And what's better about scanlations is that there's groups, lots of groups, that do it. and they do it for free. They then hand off the stories to websites that allow people to read it for free. These sites include the ever popular Mangafox, and Onemanga.
These sites, and the scanlators, are nice enough to discontinue series once an american publisher asks them to. This has a tendency to make some readers angry because, outside having to pay (which you don't even really have to do since bookstores will generally let you read the manga's while you're inside the store), they now have to deal with slower updates. Like in the case of black butler. I never followed it online, but the chapters that were online were FAR ahead of the books that were available in english. so now readers have to wait about a year to figure out what they would have learned the next week.
anywho, now that i've explained that... like i said, there's a lot of sites that let you read these scanlations. you can get them right from the scanlator's sites, but most people go to Mangafox or Onemanga... or StopTazmo (a group directed to stopping the group Tazmo, which requires readers to pay for FREE material). Most people use Mangafox, because it has a LOT more stories than the other 2 options. But i liked Onemanga. They did have a slimmer selection, but there was still a lot of stories. and the stories they put up where very good. They were more selective, which is good in a world filled with MILLIONS of stories. Lately, more and more publishers have been telling Onemanga to discontinue series. Most of them were recently bought up, and most of them were ones i read (yet only a few are available at Borders...). I have stopped going on Onemanga for this reason. Honestly, i got REALLY tired of reaching the climax of a series only to find that i couldn't read it anymore.
Finally though, after years of this give and take, Onemanga gave in to the pressure. Publishers kept buying up the stories, and asked Onemanga to not only discontinue series, but their site.
So, by the wishes of the publishers, Onemanga is shutting down. And of course, they announced it this week, the week i thought to myself, "Maybe i should catch up on some stories."
Granted, Mangafox is still around, but there's very little hope of my brain being able to take on all of those stories.
So i ask you all to take a moment, a moment of silence, in memory of our soon-to-be dearly departed. Onemanga has treated us well. And i don't doubt that this is only the beginning of these publisher's attacks. I've gotten wind that MangaTraders (where you download manga instead of just reading it on the site [there's a HUGE selection too]) has been receiving pressure too. I don't doubt Mangafox has been getting hit too. Some of my friends that do some side-work in scanlations say that they've been ask to discontinue a lot of series are getting attacked as well.
This may start the end of us english readers having access to stories we otherwise wouldn't be able to read. Be prepared for either a rush of people learning japanese, or a whole mess of ignorance.

I don't know why, but something happened to me that made me stop reading Manga. Something happened to me and I was unable to ever pick up another Manga. One day I read like the first 10 Ranma 1/2, and after that, I just never picked up another one again. It's been years. I feel so sad now cuz I can't read anymore (Not can't... I know how.. Lol) I just suddenly no longer have the patience.
