Most Underrated Anime Award goes to...(Problem with Genre Bias)

Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha Movie the 1st.

Yes, its quite disappointing to see such great movies or even any anime ignored because other seres that followed the same genre gave it a bad name to start with.

See here.

The entire Magical Girl theme has been quite a "turn-off" in front of many anime fans today. I've heard many people including my friends recommend anime to each other and what do I hear the most often genre that results in "Ok, I'll go watch it"?

Comedy
Action
Romance

And then there's Magical Girl

Yes, a genre/theme that's pretty much at the bottom of the barrel, and the only reason some of them even make the 7.00/10.00s is because most of it is either action/comedy/Romance anyways.

I tried recommending a Magical Girl anime to anyone and it's always met with negativity. BUt I guess it's shows like Sailor Moon and Card Captor Sakura that pops up in people's minds when they first hear "Magical Girl", and they think that the entire Genre is mostly based on little girls running around using magic with pretty little special effects. But who could blame them? These shows are popular and serve to represent the genre. So in that case these "not too great" shows end up illustrating how "not so great" all the other "Magical Girl" shows are (no offence to all you Sakura Fans our there).

I've been in the anime club at my school (Which really does nothing else but watch a few episodes of different anime each week) and have had a taste of what people think are "great" anime. I agree hat some of them are good, but I believe most of them are "good" because their ratings were pulled up simply by clinging on to the three super-popular genres mentioned above.

For example, I believe that Honey and Clover (Romance-Comedy) is a pretty good anime, but to be ranked 8.5+ (So far the best anime ever are ranked at exactly 9.0/10.0) seems a little high (I'd give it 8.0).

Would I give Kure-nai (Action, Comedy and Romance) and 8.1 rating? No way. It was more like a 7.3 to me.

Finally, even a Magical Girl anime that seems like it is sandwitched between two giant slices of Comedy and Romance, AKA Princess Tutu (Anime based on magical ballet) gets its rating up to 8.4, and for anyone that's interested I'd give this anime a 6.5...ok a 6.8 just because Nana Mizuki-chan is one of the main characters (see, even I have some bias when it comes to which voice actress I'm hearing from the main characters).

Ok, I'll now give an example of an anime a little more common to you people. Ever heard of the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Season 2? Well it had 14 episodes, 8 of which were the same ones aired 8 times in a row, (the rest seem to start a plot which was left in the middle of nowhere when it ended). But of course, being a comedy as well as another high profiled Genre Psychological, It got pulled up from (I've asked everyone I know who's seen it, and since the 1st season was very popular I got about 40 opinions in a day) an estimated 3.5 to a 6.8.

But wait, if not for Genre, how else are we going to classify the things we like watching? How am I supposed to know what is waiting for me when my friend recommends a movie? Simple, just put it on your list and go watch it if you have the time. When we use genres to give ourselves an idea of what we might be watching, we're actually just flashing back on things we've experienced in that for those fields (I've had anime-biased people who said they didn't like anime in general, but have only watched shows like Naruto, Pokemon, Yu-gi-oh, etc.).

I say, so what if you don't like "scary" shows? If you have nothing else to watch, go watch it. If you've seen some of it and really don't like it, then turn it off or close the book if that's what you're reading. It really doesn't take too much time off your hands and even if you didn't like it, you can still talk to your friends about it (mainly why it was bad). I admit that before I watched Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha, I had the "sailor moon" and "card captor Sakura" image when I heard the words "Magical Girl". Now I've seen something extrordinary and have only begun being able to share it with some people (after months and months of failed convincing since they can't get passed the words "Magical Girl"). We have to stop letting our biases block out whatever masterpieces that are out there, we have to stop letting our fixed beliefs lure us into overrated shows that only waste our time, we have to stop letting our hasty generalizations decide what's supposed to be good for us. WE have to make our own choices.

Thank you for reading such a long post. I understand it wasn't easy.

You're right but also alot of the magical girl anime are directed at young girls...that's some stigma about it because it doesn't have the depth of storyline that most of the other genre have because why bother with symbolism and such when its just as easy to recreate a basic storyline and little kids won't care as long as its pretty...

at least thats from the magical girl anime I've watched...there are probably some good ones out there...I just haven't seen them

The only one I've seen so far with a very good storyline is Lyical Nanoha that's why anime forums have this as a discussion thread and leave out all the others. I really do hope this series revolutionizes the genre because it's really getting nowhere.
