MAG
So... mag is coming out soon and for anyone thats curious and has a ps3... theres the final open beta that anyone can download and play right now. it started on the 4th and ends on the 10th i believe.
as a reminder this is the game being developed by zipper (dudes who did the good socom games) and its got 256 player games (128 a side)
so dl the demo, and once you hit lvl 10 you can get into the 256 games. the default for all under lvl 10 is a 64 player game. still pretty great. it takes some getting used to but if you get a good squad and squad leader things can be a blast.
just a warning, the original dl from psn is only like 260 something megs... but its a trick. after you download that it boots to the mag screen and downloads the real game... clocking in at about 1.9 gigs (or more i think if you are in the uk... not sure)
so yeah. i believe its a worldwide beta as well so this is the big push to check their servers.
i suggest everyone check it out while you can.

I'm glad I sat down and downloaded the beta after reading your recommendation, T-rex! xD I tried it out last night and this morning, and even though I only played about three matches I agree it's a blast! A really powerful experience for me, at least xD
I must say I'm impressed about the number of players!

yeah. im not in love with it as it seems the field of vision is a bit too big given its an fps... but this is zippers first fps so... yeah...
beyond that, my biggest fear has been squashed. lag. i have a ps3 hooked up wirelessly so i worry about lag and even in a 256 game... i never had any lag. its pretty amazing, and even if this game isnt super awesome... it just leads the way for future huge games. even mmo style games potentially.

I agree that the field of vision feels rather large. I'm not a big fps-gamer myself, but there are times where it seems you just gets killed waaaay to easily over large distances (or you spot enemies from far away, but can't hit them). Then again, it's impossible to say whether or not I was just killed by snipers all the time xD

yeah. its inevitable that there are a lot of snipers in any game you play. that just means cover is more important in this game than most, which is something i really need to get used to.

so... i caved and got the game.
im in the sver faction as ive got a buddy in there. that being said when i played the beta i was valor and already it seems just slightly different. i cant put my finger on it but its really come together for me. im loving the fact that i can be a field support guy, just running around healling people and not worrying about my kill to death ratio and i still get mad points.
currently lvl 12 after one 24 hr period of owning the game.

I got the game this past Thursday... currently level 16, playing for the Raven company (as I did in the beta...) I'm amazed at how funny the game is even in the matches where you get your a$$ kicked badly

That is indeed a great feature. I have considered unlocking the abilities to heal and revive teammates, but it always seems as though something else comes up right when I'm about to do so ^^;

my biggest fear is that people will leave mag when bad company 2 comes out (as that is an awesome multiplayer plus it has a single player campaign as well.)
that being said, socom fans are loving the crap out of this game (as its made by zipper interactive, the people who did the old socom games) so i would say the game will last a long time. it might be harder to get into a 256 game down the line but meh.
to be honest, people still play the old socom games online so i mean... mag will most likely have a strong following well into the next console cycle of sony.
also, just ranked up to lvl 15, and i can now be a squad leader. i havent played any big maps, but i can set new way points and have my squad of 8 take out bunker and it with give them extra experience if they do so. pretty bad @ss. not sure what the next lvl is to command the platoon (32 players) where i think you can call in for air strikes or something. its pretty awesome.
