less reason to love nintendo =(

Insiders stress that Revolution runs on an extension of the Gekko and Flipper architectures that powered GameCube, which is why studios who worked on GCN will have no problem making the transition to the new machine, they say. IBM's "Broadway" CPU is clocked at 729MHz, according to updated Nintendo documentation. By comparison, GameCube's Gekko CPU ran at 485MHz. The original Xbox's CPU was clocked at 733MHz. Meanwhile, Xbox 360 runs three symmetrical cores at 3.2GHz.
Revolution's ATI-provided "Hollywood" GPU clocks in at 243MHz. By comparison, GameCube's GPU ran at 162MHz, while the GPU on the original Xbox was clocked at 233MHz. Sources we spoke with suggest that it is unlikely the GPU will feature any added shader features, as has been speculated.
The overall system memory numbers we reported last December have not greatly fluctuated, but new clarifications have surfaced. Revolution will operate using 24MBs of "main" 1T-SRAM. It will additionally boast 64MBs of "external" 1T-SRAM. That brings the total number of system RAM up to 88MBs, not including the 3MB texture buffer on the GPU. By comparison, GameCube featured 40MBs of RAM not counting the GPU's on-board 3MBs. The original Xbox included 64MBs total RAM. Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 operate on 512MBs of RAM.
It is not known if the 14MBs of extra D-RAM we reported on last December are in the current Revolution specifications. |

*sigh*. Don't you listen to anything Nintendo say? They are not interested in numbers representing power beneath the console. That's not what they see is important. They want to change the medium in which games are played and they wantto do it with an affordable console that's easy to produce games for.

those number mean nothing, its the chipset.
take a look at PC's
Intel's Processors run at 3.2 GHZ
but i can get the same, if not BETTER preformance out of an AMD 3400+ processor. EVEN THOUGH it runs at 2.2ghz
take a look at my video card, i have a 9800pro
my brother has a 9700AIW
i overclocked his video card to my core/mem freq of my superior card, i compared the framerates in games, and mine still had about a 10 frame rate over his. (3D marks were higher as well)
i UNDERCLOCKED my 9800pro to the core freq's of my brothers system setup, and the preformance of mine underclocked, was about the same as the 9700 overclocked.
what im trying to get at is.. just becuase the mhz is slow, doesnt mean that its not bad. ATI is actually designing the thing, they are designing it to get the maximum amount of power out of something that will generate less heat, and cost a LOT less to produce at the sacrifice of some preformance.
the only real limitation i see for the console, is the RAM, but ram is expensive, and limiting it to that low amount is most likely due to them trying to keep the console cheep.
with those system specs, i can see the console selling for $100. nintendo may lose a little cash, but the console itself wont cost too much more to make. and at $100 for a next gen system how can you say no?
the processor though im worried about (not so much the video card) it seems a bit slow for a next gen console, i'd probably be happier with a 1.7 or a 2.2ghz processor in that baby.
or hell if they are making it so slow so that they can use a heatsink, i think maybe putting 2 of those wimpy processors in there would be a good idea.
i trust nintendo, i know they arent out of the game, and i know that speeds in MHZ isint everything.

My country lay within a vast desert. When the sun rose into the sky, a burning wind punished my lands, searing the world. And when the moon climbed into the dark of night, a frigid gale pierced our homes. No matter when it came, the wind carried the same thing. Death. But the winds that blew across the green fields of Hyrule brought something other than suffering and ruin. I coveted that wind, I suppose." ~ Ganondorf. |
