ahh good old patches. they update it often apparently.
hopefully the next patch makes it so that patches dont take forever to install.

you dream big thor.
sony does not.
used to be a firmware update every other week but ever since they put out trophies, not too many updates for the system. more then likely games get updates and stuff (added trophy support and so on)
and back then people would complain "omg, i turn on my machine and every time there is a new system update! argh!"
so really, i guess they cant win lol.

OK so i moved the console to my downstairs, it has a stronger signal strength than before and its downloading at about 75% of my maximum. which is perfect. i disconnect less often and i can browse network items MUCH quicker.
my oppinion of PSN just increased with that stronger signal strength.

just so i can compare, what kind of download rates are you getting?
i guess youd have to estimate... or go download a demo and just tell me the size and time it took.
usually takes me about 3 hours for a 1.2 gig download. this is wireless on the same floor as the router but... going through like 4 walls, two of which are a bathroom.
ive tried running cables through my atic but i just cant get one lone enough. 50 feet wont do it. and... thats just how it has to be for now.

With Ethernet cable you cannot go past 100 feet of cable or you get signal loss and attenuation. Really it starts at like 97 feet or so, but there isn't that much loss. Also it depends on what wireless protocol you're using... I use the word protocol but that is not right.
Draft N is pretty fast but all it is is that you have multiple g connections instead of only one, so you have 2 connections to the router, but it is in 2.4gHz which a lot of devices use (which results in interference)...
If you have a lot of people around you're home with signals in the "b" and "g" networks, look into getting a "a" band router (I don't know if PS3 can see the "a" networks, it's at 5 gHz and most people don't use it, max distance is like 50 meters but the transfer rate is 54 Mb/s (megabits not megabytes all connections are rated in mega bites per second, 4 bites makes a bytes...

yah im fairly knowledgeable about networks.
i noticed that the 360 with the official wireless adaptor gets better signal strength from the same position as the PS3. this lets my 360 sit at the farther away TV and still beable to play games without any problems, and the PS3 sits at the closer TV and not have any problems.
have a D-link 655 Wireless N Router. unfortunately its not the dual-band one (aww) the advantage of the Dual band is that wireless N is broadcast on a seperate switch from the Wireless B/G
by doing this, both B/G channel, and the N channel both see farther ranges, faster connection speeds, and stronger bandwidth.
i WISH i had one, as my current network to get the optimal gaming preformance from the consoles in needed to turn off any kind of encryption (it can dampen the preformance) and i had to turn off Wireless B (no DS online now)
generally, ANY router will get better preformance if you do these two things. you just have to ask yourself if its worth it. turning off B means less compatability with some wireless devices, but doesnt pose a problem if you know all your hardware uses G or N. but turning off encryption means that your network is open to anyone to jump in. your neighbors can start stealing your internet or somone with wits enough could get easy access to your PC's connected.
aaannyyyway. ive balanced out my router to the maximum. the only way it could be better is to spend the abhorant amount of money to upgrade an already top of the line router for a slightly more top of the line router.

I've heard though that the dual band makes it so your N doesn't get throttled to "g" when a g device connects...
Think about what you said though about the 360 and ps3, you're trying to compare a internal and external modem.
I'd rather have a external modem... by the way does the modem connect to the ethernet port or the usb port...
I know that when anything gets hot, it doesn't work as well and that it has to either go through plastic or plastic and metal.

internal has the advantage of being built onto the motherboard and having a lower response time to the CPU, and also have a higher voltage/wattage going to it. but external can have better reception as it can be built with an antenna, but has a set voltage and cant really be as powerful as it could.
plastic hardly hinders a wireless signal, but metal does, the top of the PS3 is plastic, so i don't see why it would hinder the signal at all.
and comparing the two wireless adaptors is like comparing a grape to a watermellon. sony went with the cheap parts for the wireless adapter as they are trying to do anything to lower the manufacturing cost of the PS3.
where as Microsoft built the adaptor with preimum parts for the best signal and response times. they did this because they were going to sell it for an exhorbant amount of money ($90 is f*king absured) but it does insure that the adapter is built with the best parts possible.
on another note:
Warhawk is kinda not a good as i thought it would be. its OK, but ultimately the combat feels clumsy and weak. i will play it a bit, but really im not too happy with it.
Ratchet and Clank Future is a fun game, im enjoying it immensely, though the challenge of the game is quite odd, the first 75% of the game is too easy, the last 25% of the game is incredibly hard. (ok, not that hard, but they can 1 shot you now, so it got a bit tougher)
Uncharted: Drakes Fortune is AWESOME, so far my favorite of the games i have recieved. its beautyful, has a good and interesting story, combat that doesnt feel gimicky but well thought out (when i die i know its cause i did something stupid) the only gripe i have is that i know im almost at the end and i wish it would go on quite a bit longer and i can occasionally not hide behind cover correctly. like, hide on the wrong side of the pillar making myself an easy target. Bonus points for the main character being named the same as me. (Nathan)
Little Big Planet hasn't arrived yet, im a little pissed off from the one game that i was really excited for never showed up. im talking with the guy on ebay about it. if it doesn't show up by Monday i'm going to ask for my money back.
Motorstorm i havent played yet, i should. but im busy with Uncharted.
Resistance looks piss-poor on my TV. apparently it refuses to upscale to 1080i and 480p on my TV looks like garbage with scan-lines running diagonally across the screen. the colors are pale and ugly and im sad i paid for this game. i knew it was crap before i got it but my first test with it when it came out was very brief and was hoping that it got better. Though bonus points for the main character sharing my first name (Nathan)... wait, TWO PS3 games where the main character shares my name? i LOVE it.
Metal Gear Solid 4: Played the first level, no learing curve, im not sure WTF im doing as the game expects me to know what im doing already. nothing beats trying to stab a Metal Gear to death.
some downloadable games:
flOw.. dont buy this game, its not worth the money. i wish i didnt
Echochrome - Worth the money, its clever, HIGHLY original and thrilling in small doses, i play it when i want to wind down from a big fight in another game. i cant play too many levels in a row otherwise i feel like im wasting my time, but playing the game a level at a time extends the joy and makes it a great occasional treat.
Super Stardust HD - Thought that this would be a clone of Galaxy wars on the 360... it is not. its fun, VERY arcadey, and games average longer than Galaxy Wars.
Pixel-Junk Monsters - Hard game. a tower defense game where some levels are impossible to ace even on easy mode. the challenge though gives it replayability so its OK, worth the $10
Games im looking forward to getting:
Killzone 2: the demo was short and not that impressive, but from what i hear the multiplayer is excelent.
Resistance 2: i heard that this one was better than Resistance 1, lets hope so otherwise I'll be pissed.
Uncharted 2: loved the first one, the second one is apparently even better. looking forward to it.

yeah mgs4 is pretty rough on the get go.
as for warhawk, if you are used to shooters that are really solid, warhawk is crap. the draw of warhawk is that you can get your war on on foot, jeep or plane. you get enough people going, it is fun, but in no way is it a "satisfying shooter"
and lbp, im fairly confident youll love it.
actually recently some guys recreated every level from contra in LBP using the paintball gun from the metal gear dl pack. anyone can play it im pretty sure even if you dont get the pack. needless to say its fantastic. just look up... little big contra and there will be the 8 levels mostly by different authors (all supposedly friends that split it up). its a good time.

Im not too sure youll prefer Resistance 2 over Resistance 1. In my case I absolutly loved the first one but hated the second. Mainly its just in the second one I never really knew what was going on story wise so I just played through for the sake of it. In the first one though the game is narrated so much better. I also liked in the first one that you could choose whichever weapon you wanted to use for whatever situation whereas in the second you only have 2 weapons at a time. Its perfectly fine but it always makes it stupidly obvious whats going to happen next. Nothing wrong with the multiplayer in Resistance 2 though although I would have liked 64 man death matches rather than just team deathmatches going that high and the games still perfectly fine to play.
