Im so serious right now!
So... over the course of my 24ish odd years ive been told by multiple people in multiple ways that im never serious. that my ability to have a serious conversation with someone lacks and that im always joking in some way or another. this has been said to me by best friends and friends of friends alike. and though... i get it, I feel like cracking a joke here and there to lighten the mood of a serious subject doesnt mean that I shouldnt been taken serious when it comes to serious conversation.
it happened again today. while going about my normal everyday stuff, some friends said "we could never take you seriously" which i needed them to elaborate on. what they mean is, they just about never ever see me get angry and im always joking and making people laugh. I do enjoy this... but i want to be taken seriously even with that.
kinda pisses me off a bit. is being serious less important than im making it out to be? my only defense is that ive had friends not tell me about important things in their life because they figured id just laugh whatever off which isnt true. anyway.... just venting.
what say you guys, im i incapable of being taken seriously online too?

Yeah. its totally more of an "in person" thing i guess. the whole act of writing things out leads itself to deliberating on what you are about to say, plus, most of my sarcasm would be lost through the tubes of the internet. a sad thing indeed.

But cereally now, you're taking the whole serious thing too far, being serious is overrated. It's good that you're as light and easy going as you are, it's healthier for you, less likely for high blood pressure late y'know? Makes it easier for people to warm up to you too. It does hurt that your friend couldn't trust you with things going on in their life though, so you should try and find a balance; easy-going but still maintaining the capacity to be serious, yeah?

I enjoy people who are as you describe yourself.
If I was in a situation that someone said they didn't tell me something because they thought I wouldn't take it seriously my exact words would be, "Well I guess you don't know me as well as I thought you did." and leave it at that.... make em think about it.
Just be super "cereal" for a day around your friends and see how they react...

In real life I believe I'm both a serious nature and a joker. I can say the most hilarious things, while also discussing very serious topics; I think that's a thing most people are capable of(?). In my own opinion, it's a nice trait as long as you feel good about it yourself and doesn't give it too much thought. I'd say people will take you seriously when you are being serious, but that will probably depend on the person in question...
Enough about that! Whenever I see a thread with you in it, Seif, I regard you as one of the more serious persons - probably because the most threads I spot you in are those held in the "Other Games and Systems"-forum, but I also remember funny/sarcastic posts from you as well.

i take some things you say seriously, mostly the ones in which i believe you are trying to be serious.
but in-person i have the SAME problem, and i get around it by either lowering the tone and speed of my voice slightly and making eye-contact with someone. or just adding "being Serious now..." to the start of the conversation.
it can get difficult to be taken seriously when everyone thinks your joking. it makes serious conversations you NEED to have even harder to initiate.

I was watching V for Vendetta last night and the one character was asked "Is everything a joke to you?" ... his reply? "Only the things that matter."
Lighthearted and worry free should never be mistaken for a lack of seriousity. I always laugh and smile, sometimes, however, it does offend people... f 'em
