ok, i played this recently, and as for levelling tips i think this is a good way to power level:
Set your cursor to memory
get into a fight with any random enemy
have two of your characters (Or one depending on how strong or weak you are) casting one of the spells you want to level up on themselves or on 'all' if you can (yes, even fire and ice and the like)
And have the other two or one characters casting cure on all (Which will also level up your cure magic)
now grad a pencil and an elastic band and fasten it so that the X button is constantly held down.
Depending on your level (Earlier levels have less mp and therefore run out very quickly) this should result in insanely quick spell levelling.
Have a play with it and see what works for you, let me know if it doesnt work, cos i might be thinking of another game. (I have spent the last two years playing all of them. yep. all of them.)
and as for weapons, i think its the same deal, just attack the sh*t out of your own characters and keep healing when nescessary.
if all else fails, just battle HEAPS of random monsters, ones that you can defeat moderately easy, and stay near a town to heal up when nescessary.
Also, more info on staying at the INN ( I found it to be the cheapest way to heal earlier on.)
When you are levelling by fighting battles, and staying near a town for healing, always heal yourselves as much as possible before you stay in the inn. Im talkin most health and no MP. it is much cheaper if you are just restoring your mp, rather than both your health and mp. which helps HUGELY early on. trust me. full health and no mp.
i think..

There brought 1 and 2 out as anniversary editions about two years ago i think.
It is well worth getting them ,they are much smoother and prettier than the originals.
