Make sure the image is less than 58kb in size and less than 100x100 pixels, so take note on the image file size as well. You many have a 20x20 pixel image but if its file size is 1MB, then you can't upload it..most probably you had a long/heavy animated avatar.
Pick a simple animated avatar/non-animated avatar, make sure its less than 58kb, 100x100 pixel maximum, and go for either jpeg or GIF format and it'll be fine. Once uploaded, it will say your profile is successfully updated, it might take a few hours or a day for your newly uploaded avatar to appear.. 
Refer to the faqs section for more info on avatar and signatures, you can also learn a lot about BB coding for forum there - inserting link, spoilers, images, hyperlinking images, etc.
p.s: You can edit your posts using the EDIT option next to the QUOTE option, so that you don't have to double post or post many times to add in stuffs/edit your old posts if nobody have replied below you.
