How Sony can redeem itself.
Sony has made some REALLY arrogant moves, some really dirty moves, and some things they have done can be classified as theft and will most likely have a lawsuit sooner or later (see the Sony-Book Pro)
but i have found a way for them to redeem themselves in my eyes, and make me WANT to buy a PS3 at launch and have one on at all times.
the idea came from an earlier article i posted about how the PS3 is the KING of floating point performance. and i remembered a program called Folding@home
what is it and how will it make my opinion of sony improve?
Folding@home is a program that runs while your computer is idle, ituses floating-point-calculations to further the research of diseases such as cancer. recently ATi said that they were going to aid Folding@home by giving software that would allow your video card (which is amazing at floating-point calculations) to do these calculations for you in the background when the video card isnt being heavily used. that way computers around the world can aid cancer research without making the computer slow down at all.
how can the PS3 help?
the PS3 is a Floating-point powerhouse, the GPU is Floating-point oriented, and the CPU is better at Floating-point-calculations than a standard desktop processor (by A LOT! i mean, we have video cards for that function so our CPU doesn't have to do Floating-point calculations...)
if Sony has every PS3 that is sold come with software to run Folding@home while the console isn't gaming. i would be immensely impressed and encourage everyone to get a PS3.
whats a better selling point?
Great gaming console?

quite honestly if Sony just included it in EVERY PS3 that would be much better. i will DEFINITELY find a way to do it myself if i ever purchase a PS3. but its the gigantic community that would benefit this project the most.
i mean, millions of PS3's worldwide power combined into one project is FAR superior than ANY supercomputer we can fathom at this moment.
if as many PS3's sell as PS2's.. then there will be close to 100 million PS3's. thats a total of 8 processors (7DSP+1GPU) per console.. so 800 million processors working together to find the cures to diseases? thats a lot, and a damn awesome possibility.
