I doubt that Square Enix would ditch such a lucrative series such as FF anyway. Squares names built on the series outside of Japan.
Well if they were going to do the definitive Final Final Fantasy they wouldnt do bad to look at some of the fan fics out there where they link the worlds on a regular basis. I know i did one. but through the eyes of Shiva since the summons are usually the one constant of FF from 4 onwards.

Besides the whole name for FF comes from a joke within the team that designs them that each game would always be the final one.
