why does it get red before you can level up? is it just to let you know that you will be able to level soon?

Yeah it means you're close to the required amount of exp.

I'm not sure.
I would assume based on something I think I read, that in the past alot of people would wonder why they aren't levelling up when they keep battling.
The red exp would warn the players that they are close or have max the current level and they need to post to level up already.
In a previous build, you can store your exp so you can basically fight alot more of level 1 monsters and when it's time for you to level up, you can quickly jump up to level 5-10 because you've collected enough exp from just fighting level 1 monsters.
It takes the challenge away and Fun/Thoul decided to put some sort of cap so once the max exp has been gained, the player stops gaining exp beyond the max.
Ex. At level 1 you can only get to 500/500 before needing to post level up.
In the past you can probably get to 999999999999/500 and when you post level up and you can quickly jump skip to how much exp you got that will allow you to go to a certain high level taking away the challenge.
I'd also like to note that I wasn't here when the previous build is going on so any of this post might be misinformed and is only drawn upon my comprehension of the data I've read in a previous old topic here which I'm not even sure if I remember accurately.
