I might get SoulSilver. I have Gold for GBC, so I won't be getting HeartGold. Also, HeartGold sounds stupid in my opinion.

Go for the DS Lite if you just want to play DS games. There's no point in getting a DSi unless you actually want all the extra functions.
EDIT:
I was just looking at SoulSilver on the GAME website and it came up with this:
"The Johoto Region was beloved by Pokémon fans for being the setting for Pokémon Gold and Silver on GameBoy Advance."
Anyone notice what's wrong with this?

 .......wow. Yes guys, Gold and Silver were for the GameBoy ADVANCE. Brilliant job there. Crystal wasn't even GBA ffs. Crystal was GBC and if I'm not mistaken Gold and Silver weren't even that... at the very least I know that G&S ran on original GBs where Crystal did not........ I still have the GBP that I ran them on for years >.>

okay so i just got a ds. like... today. no games yet but i was thinking about pokemon. last one i played was pokemon red way back in the day. so which version should i get. youve got about 24 hours to aid me in this decision.

It all boils down to exclusives and the order in which you obtain legendaries.
In Soul Silver, you will get Lugia earlier in the game, but Ho-Oh much later. And vice versa in Heart Gold.
Soul Silver has Groudon and Latios, while Heart Gold has Kyogre and Latias.
Me and my room mate are currently in debate as to whether we should get Heart Gold or Soul Silver. So far Soul Silver is looking like the way to go.
The key factor I'm seeing that could push Heart Gold is the fact that Ho-Oh comes with a Sacred Ash, where Lugia comes with nothing.
Edit: Also, since you haven't played since old school Red, prepare for a major shock, the game has progressed a lot and there is a ton of stuff you've missed out on. Pokemon couldn't even hold items in old Red, and that's been around for a while now.
Just sayin, be prepared for a lot of stuff you don't know about/don't get.

I played the original Gold, Silver, and Crystal.
So far (4 or 5 badges in) everything is in it's place, there are a few things I've seen different like the game corner is ridiculously different than it was in the originals. There are a few changes to where some Legendaries are, and some added of course. In the originals Lugia was Silver exclusive and Ho-Oh was Gold exclusive, now it's just a matter of how long it takes to get them. Most of the trainers you run into are the same. I think gym battles were generally made easier. The day care is MUCH faster. All of the pokemon have been updated to have their newer movesets and whatnot.
Overall, as a person who has spent most of my time with the Pokemon series playing second gen, I'd say that this is a big step up. There are a few irritating things, like some of the gyms feel like serious pushovers, but this is still up in the air for me, as I'm really not that far yet.
And as a general hint, buy heal balls, they are so worth the extra 100 a piece.

The GameCorner isn't anywhere near as good, in my opinion. You could get Ho-oh and Lugia in Gold and Crystal. Just at different times and at diferent levels. I haven't tried the Day Care, so I wouldn't know about that.

I'm at the Elite Four, and I have to agree that the Gym Leaders were push-overs.
