So far I've found that the 3rd gym leader was annoyingly hard to beat without a fighting pokemon. I just couldn't get her Miltank to die. So I eventually levelled up a traded machop lol

Meh, there are plenty of other options. I beat it with my Scyther.
And again, I recall her being MUCH more difficult when I fought her in the original... but maybe it's just me.
And LJ, you are indeed correct, I was mistaken about them being exclusive originally. It's been way too long since I've played Pokemon.  I think I never ended up getting Ho-Oh in my Silver because I didn't feel like it would be useful.
Anyhow... as unrelated as this is, I got FF8 for my psp finally.

I found that miltank much harder in the original... maybe cuz this time I pwned it before it could rollout me to death

Just north of Goldenrod is the National Park, which has the Bug-Catching Competition, only held on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. There are Scythers aplenty during the event.

no you didn't go the wrong way
after you finish ecruteak gym you can go either left towards olivine or right towards mahogany town
but in order to continue to the eighth gym you need to stop team rocket
so basically you can go anywhere you want except east of mahogany

I love me some good pokemon ahah. Picked up heart gold the day it came out, been loving it ever since. I've been getting pretty serious about it lately though, with IV breeding, EV training and all that...me and my friends've been getting all competitive lately, idk why xD
