Have you ever had a console mess up on you?
I remember reading back on miscellaneous forums and hear so many people complain that their console (insert name here) didn't work. I can honestly say that I have owned almost every single console (except for most sega consoles) I have owned the Atari 2600, Atari 7200, NES, SNES, PSX, N64, Dreamcast, PS2, and the Xcrap, and none of my consoles EVER had a problem and believe me I played them all to death. The only problem I had with a console was with the NES when sometimes when you turned on the system the screen would just blink and you had to blow on the game cartridge to get it to work
However I always take care of all of my belongings, everything I have is in mint condition. I have hundreds of DVDs and CDs without a single scratch on them. When I go rent a game from Blockbuster the games are totally scratched up, and my friends had discs that were totally scratched up as well. Their consoles would just be thrown in their closet somewhere with tangled wires and yanked out when they wanted to play games.
So I cannot help but wonder if most people who have problems with their consoles is due to abuse and not taking care of their equipment?

I had the ol' blow-on-the-cart troubles with the NES and Atari systems. Other than that, no console problems here either.
I think a lot of the problems with modern consoles does come from abuse. I guess overuse and faulty components can be a factor, but not too often I think.

Interesting, do you remember which games gave a disc read error? It is possible that error appeared because have of the game loaded but the disc was so scratched that it couldnt retreive the rest of the info.

I've had a few console problems. My first PS2 broke (not from misuse, it's kept not in a closet, nor was stepped on & such), I don't even remember what, exactly, went wrong with it.
My current PS2 (the mini one) has recently needed to have the power cord pushed down on to work. We usually keep a few books on the cord to keep the console on. It's a bother, but it works otherwise.
My Sega Genesis stopped working after years of play because...it got old, as all game systems do.
Nintendo 64 needed a blow on the cartridge/cartridge insert place every so often, but that was no big problem.
I don't know what my first game system was, I just know that it was sweet, and didn't break until it got too old.
My GameCube (which I've had for longer than both PS2s combined) has had no problems whatsoever (besides disks being scrathed due to brothers's lack of putting them away.
My XBox had no problems when I had it.

My PS2 broke and needed replacement (thank god for warranty)
the new one i got lasted untill the new warranty wore out then crapped out the following week. so i bought a new one.
My third PS2 refused to play half my games. i traded it in at a store and bougt a new one (total loss about $50)
My Final PS2 got a disc read error about 10% of the time.
sold that one on Ebay recently. no plans to buy a new one, too much money shot down that poophole.
My xbox had only one problem which was a bad network card. dident make it unplayable, but it also ment no internet/networked games.
sold it to a friend without internet for $80 and bought a brand spanking new one for $150. worth every penny as i play my xbox every day.
my gamecube has NEVER crapped out on me. and i've beaten it like a dead horse. It fell of the bed many times in the family motorhome (thats where the TV was) its tripped my dad many times and only twice did he ever kick it from tripping on it.
Frankly im not going to buy the PS3 for two reaons:
1: The PS2 crapped out on me WAY TO MUCH and i dont expect anything better from the PS3
2: It costs $500. no way in HELL am i going to pay $500 for a console that lasts me a year and needs replacement.
im not the only one with PS2 woes. my best friend's PS2 (the friend who i sold the xbox to) has gone through 2 PS2's but couldent afford a new one so he constantly has to do little tricks to get his games to run (like shaking the console or blowing in the DvD tray, he even vaccums it to keep the dust out.)
come to think of it all my friend own every console. and everyone has had the same experiences as me (well my friend who i sold the xbox to never had any new problems) the PS2 crapped out at least once, and either needed replacement or continous mataniance. while their Gamecube never broke (though i think they took better care of their gamecube)
i duno. when i called microsoft tech support i got an indian man who dident know what a "Network card" was.
its more than the "F*** you" i got from sony when i called them but equally unhelpful. come to think of it i hope that jerk got fired. well BOTH of those jerks. one for being a jerk and one for lieing on his application.

GrilledCheese, your slimline PS2 doesn't need to have the AC adaptor replaced does it if you say your power cord is causing the problem?
There's been a big recall on that part for some of those PS2's.

My PS2 had the disc read error but it only happened on games that were on CDs rather than DVDs. Its a really strange problem because I fixed it then put a DVD game in and when I switched back to a CD game it broke again so I know nothings wrong with the laser.
It wasnt too bad a problem though as I could just use my PS1 as most CD games were PS1 games and now I have my PS3 instead.

No... no... I would never had thought anyone to treat their things like that... especially not consoles or games!

Well, that's doesn't work in my few problematic cases (like when my PS2 'crashed' or whatever when I reach a certain hectic battle in KH2 - this matter was solved by putting it into a vertical stance and it's been great ever since) - I'm a perfectionist when it comes to my games' and consoles' wellbeing.
Unless of course, you count 2-3 years of daily, intensive playing as abuse...
