I beat them both without it. Gotta love mime... I only used cloud really, with the others healing... I used Omnislash then waited until cloud got damaged then did mime and Omnislash again, and when i needed to i healed and just attacked normally until his limit was full again.... and did it again... Of course I did have all stats 255 with ziedrich and ultima weapon.

At leats he didnt go into his FULL materia setup.
I made it a mission to defeat ruby when i first met him the first time i played. And after i did it with kotr, i tried with just hades as my only summon. Then!!! it was just the 1 char challenge, which i never managed to do...yet.
