Halt!

I was just wondering...would you guys shoot a person, after telling him to halt, and then he/she just shouts back halt at you? (That person is just standing there waiting for your reply.)

I know this question might not look or sound serious but it is.

You mean the thing about someone being shot because they were brandishing a sword at police?
I would if they were threatening.

If they just shouted it back then no, I wouldn't, coz thats daft. No need in wasting a bullet.

If you think about it, this is a very delicate balance in effect with this question. if they told you to halt, and you said no, then they would think "why should I stop if you aren't?" This may result in a shooting merely because of the smart- assy tone of most of society, especially in todays youth. It is very possible that this has happened.

Either that or he was looking at a mirror and heard his echo, which is pretty likely also.

Ok, so a policeman/army police was stationed somewhere. Then, he notices a guy moving towards his station. (This is at the dead of night btw). He then tells the man to "Halt". The other man, stops doesn't move, and tells the other police/army police to "Halt" as well. Both are waiting for a reply but the policeman/army policeman replies by shooting the guy. Is that reason enough to shoot a man?

Oh and this just happened in the past. Around 1901 or 1902.

well, it sorta depends on the way it's said, if a police officer would get to hear "halt" in the wrong tone, it could be taken as a threat, not knowing if the other person would be carrying a weapon...
that, or the other person was mentally ill...
pulling out your gun would be a start, but not pull the trigger till you are sure he is a threat...

Lets see.... Anyone here who was alive in 1902?.....

Point is, values change. It depends where that station was, what the overall situation was like etc.

On the subject about police misconduct, I watch the news a lot and the police are justified in their actions most of the time. The news would show a 5 second clip of an unexplained event and say "Police shoot man for holding a pipe!" However when you get the whole story you will see that the person was a fugitive convicted of murder who said that he was going to kill the cops and concealed a pipe to look like a shotgun. When I view the comments on sites like Digg, people only read the headline and assume that cops randomly go out and shoot innocent people out of boredom. It annoys me when people rush to decisions without getting all of the facts.

Well, there was the thing about Polic in the UK shooting someone dead for wielding a sword..... I would have thought a bit more accuracy in shooting might have helped.

yeah, i agree too, shoot in the hand, foot, leg or shoulder if you can, it'll stop them from running, but try not to shoot at first

and in holland it's probably worse as the usa, when a criminal points a realy gun towards a police officer, and the officer shoots, and kills, the officer will lose his job most likely, be put badly on the news and has to go to court...

even in life or death situations...

if you're a cop in holland, it's best not to use your gun, no matter what you do with it, the criminal will be put as the victom and the officer as the bad guy...

i actually remember when a police officer came up to my school, and came into my class to talk about police career etc. obviously, people asked if he wielded a gun and if he had pepper spray on him, both of which he answered yes. but the thing that sticks is that he said 'no matter where you shoot the person, there is a 99% chance s/he will die. a head shot just results in a very messy scenario.'

like has been said, a gun should only be used when there is no other alternative. once, on the news there were two army helecopters, on a routine patrol, and they spotted a veichle with orange on the top of it, which was the same colour as enemy anti-aircraft missle launchers(i think). so, they fired a missile at it, effectively destroying it and everyone inside it. it was actually a freindly transport wagon, transferring some injured(again, i think.)

but, the point about the media is that they are very likely to find a shooting that occured. they can transform 'accidental shooting in neighbours yard' into 'lethal firing of innocent bystander by police officer'. an accident becomes an offence in the hands of the media, merely because that is what people are likely to believe.

bad news is good news.
