johnny cash's cover of nine inch nails classic hurt is excellent.
also a cover of bruce springstein song im on fire is done well by a female artist called bat on lashes.

but one cover which has to be heard mainly for the playing, is prince's cover of just my imagination by the tempations...the sound is terrible for the vocals, but the guitar solo is mind blowing, one of my fav solo's, all the emotion and longing is laid bare in the guitar playing.

Worse to be loves lover than the lover that love hath scorned.

yeah the cash cover is very good, bit too depressing for my taste but i guess that just shows how effective it is.
