good deal?
well, i chickened out for the time being with the whole "build my own pc" thing but im still in need of an upgrade. i picked something that i can afford and i think is a reasonable deal but i wanted advise, and even more so if you think you know of a better deal with relatively the same specs let me know.
anyway here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16883107091
now is it looking like it needs certain upgrades (power supply) or anything else. im not rushing out to buy anything, i wanna take my time and also get something that in a year or so, i can upgrade properly without a problem.
another question, could i get these computer specs buy building my own for less than their price?
anyway. thanks to any and all replies.

hrmmmm. let me do an estimate
the HP machiene isint a gaming rig without a graphics card. and an Intel graphics card is NOT a gaming graphics card. so ill see what i can get up to short of a graphics card. (again estimates, ill find proper links in the morning)
CPU+Motherboard: $300
RAM DDR2 PC6400 2gb: $200
Case+powersupply: $60
DvD Burner: $40
Windows XP Pro OEM: $130
Harddrive 400gb: $140
$870
yes, you would be getting more bang for your buck with a custom PC. the estimate has faster memory, a faster processor (i've seen the low-end Core 2 Duo's with a motherboard for as cheap as $250 at Fry's) not to mention you would have a larger harddrive.
heck i even included windows Pro OEM (you need OEM) and it was still about the same price (believe me, Media Center Edition is very useless. it was nice if you had a 360.... but not worth the trouble even then, Pro is the way to go)
i dident include a Mouse/Keyboard in that estimate.
oog, its 1:00am, ill see if i can scrounge up some parts for ya tomorow morning.
[edit] oh yah, and custom PC's have ALOT less hardware problems (assuming you installed everything correctly) i see HP's coming into my store all the time for repairs on parts and diagnostics.. at least with a custom built computer its a software problem 90% of the time.

i have bad experiances now with a HP computer...
you need their hardware which will cost more...
my dad bought a HP computer...
it came with LINUX and only LINUX could find the soundcard...
we had to place a different sound card in the computer for windows, and we actually had to saw out a part of the hull for the pc to place that soundcard...
so if it is indeed cheaper to build your own pc i don't know, i do know that HP can give quite a bit of headaches XD

ok i got the list:
LG 16X DVD±R Super-Multi DVD Burner With 12X DVD-RAM Write Black E-IDE/ATAPI Model GSA-H10N - OEM
JPAC 512 BATTLE BK Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case 500W Power Supply - Retail
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3400620AS 400GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM
OCZ Gold 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model OCZ2G8002GK - Retail
ASUS P5B Socket T (LGA 775) Intel P965 Express ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail
Microsoft Windows XP Professional With SP2B 1 Pack - OEM (add keyboard for $10)
Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 Conroe 1.86GHz LGA 775 Processor Model BX80557E6300 - Retail (Ghost Recon Advanced War fighter is free with the purchase of this processor, no rebate)
Total: $924.93
yah its a little bit over.. but its faster (about 20%-30% faster) larger (100gb more Harddrive space) its better looking (the case looks like an axe) and it doesn't come pre-loaded with spy ware (Windows Pro OEM)
it doesnt come with a video card. and you will need a PCI-E video card. i cant really tell you which one to get. but the November Issue of Funender Magazene i give a very detailed list of how to purchase a video card.
you should still gothough the list and find a case (with a power supply) that you think is awesome.. or would work. the one i included was $40 and had a 500w power supply. and it doesnt look too bad either.
if you want to search for another case. i will provide a link with the critera for compatability already selected. you have 127 to chose from:

edit: i looked at the dvd super drive and its just the hardware. no wires or software (not that software would be a problem, but wires i can see that being less than fun being as this would be my first build. just noticed that is all. is this the case with most hardware?

heh ohyah its OEM sorry.
its not a problem for me as i have loads of cables lying around the place.
good eye though.
(also the HDD wont come with a SATA cable... man i would ship you the cables you need easily as i have all of them just lying around...)
do you have a local PC club? fry's? any kinda computer club? they would sell the cables you need (just SATA and IDE cables, one of each.)

yah OEM are absurdly cheap. its the same brand new product, but without the cardboard box.
heck OEM windows PRO is cheaper than the Standalone version of Windows XP Home...

you dont really need them in bulk. you just need one of each:
SATA Cables (make sure they are SATA 3gbs)
IDE Cable (yah i know its 3 friggin feat. but oddly enough the 18" one is more expensive... im confused too.. eitherway you only really need like 1 foot of the stuff.)
(edit) ohyah SATA II is 3gbs. so look for SATA II. not SATA 150
