Global Warming (Taken from Fun's Tree Thread)

So since people were on the topic of arguing over global warming here is what I think on the issue and Fun can have his Tree thread left to talking about trees.

From what I understand a rise in global temperature cause a cooldown... Which is kinda of oxymoronic but hear me out. As temperatures rise, the glaciers melt faster (the land locked glaciers). Now this influx on cool, fresh water going into the ocean, not only makes the salinity of the ocean drop a little, but it also affect what is called the "ocean conveyors".

What these ocean conveyors (think of a conveyor belt), is the currents from the gulfs and equator that bring warm waters up towards the poles (which is why parts of England don't see much snow if any snow and same with Victoria BC).

So the influx of fresh water causes the ocean conveyors to slow down. Meaning that places that usually stay warm in the winter should get colder over a period of time. Kinda like a new ice age is starting.... It'll creep down slowly... But again I've seen quite a warm winter this year and a short one.

I don't think scientists can accurately predict what human presence has actually done to the planet. I know there are a couple of dead zones in the world concerning the ocean from what humans dump into it. Algae booms and what not.

Anyway whether or not global warming is something man made or something naturally occurring, the movement that it has started is good. We need to stop overconsuming (fossil fuels) and find reliable new sources of energy. We need to take a hand and help the next person out (our/your children when/if you have any) so in turn they can help out their children. We cannot do this if people don't accept change, because then we are doomed to die.

well the big thing is, just from my personal knowledge, the changing fo the currents in the oceans will dramatically affect the planets weather system. which will come from that i have no idea, but hurricanes are built of warm water only, so if all that warm water in the equator stays there, we could be looking at crazy hurricanes. that kind of change will mess up the upper atmosphere and the jetstream and could change our entire weather pattern as a planets. this would put us back to square one with "predicting" the weather if you can call it that. that being said we will have less warning for any and all weather problems and that will lead to casualties.

anyway... this is all from one class on meteorology like 3 years ago so yeah.

i am pretty sure we are helping global warming in one way or the other; look at mexico city, pollution there has reached insane levels, ppl need to *buy* oxygen sometimes or they feel dizzy and/or sleepy, and the underground turns unbearably hot at, let's say 12:00 and stays like that till night.

wheather is indeed changing everywhere, while mabus said they had a short winter, winter here was long -.- and cold, more than in previous years...of course there has to be a...sort of sequence the planet has to follow, there has already been an ice age and of course there'll be another, but perhaps we're making it happen faster than it should. of course, maybe we won't live to see it, maybe our kids won't either, but it'll happen faster than it should.

and i agree with you maby, the one thing we could do to help is teach those close to us how to help the planet. though it's certainly help if the government or someone else could teach all those dumb parents who see their kids littering the streets or 'playing' with a small tree...it's infuriating how some ppl think it's ok to litter an empty bottle or two, i've seen them and i feel like kicking some sense into them -.- i mean they just don't care...

...sorry, got emotional over this XD

When the ice melts, doesn't that reduce the total surface area that is reflecting the sun's rays? that causes the ocean to absorb more heat and overall just warm up again. (0.0)

no, the ice melting is massive, it's just too much, so another ice age is more likely than the planet heating up....but since it's gonna take centuries for that to happen, the weather's just messed up right now

btw, i DID click on that link, Lucky, but would you post it here, since this is the appropriate topic? and do you watch history channel? i saw the documentary there, and although the moon could get shot into outter space away from the earth, there's also the posibility it'll collide against the planet

I keep searching but can't find any physics type proof of the moon getting closer to the earth.

Nor can I understand why there would be an ice age. (>.<)

Man Global Warming has been the underlined topic in my Engineering degree. I don't want to sound egotistical but one lecturer said People can't save the planet, Engineers will.
I mean people buying a Toyota Prius will contribute nothing to saving the earth. It is simply a statement, a good one at that because it makes people aware and feel good. What will help are people using solar panels for electricity, since the ultimate solution is using solar power (or wind or water) to power everything at home. Of course if we did that then all the electricty and oil companies would go out of business (yay)

Lucky is also completely right too with the water.

The main problem will be the changing water currents and how it will impact on agriculture and marine life.

The Mexico city case isn't global warming, just a local case of pollution because of the population and the location of the city (the smog cant escape from the mountains nearby). The big picture is the pollution that we don't see, or smell, or get affected by its immediate presence. The problem is that it takes a long time to reverse the effects.

We're feeling the effects here too, in the last year my city had 2 record breaking heatwaves. And I'm sure you all saw that picture of the UK covered in ice lol.

try reading books or watching documentaries, i'm afraid you won't find HC documentaries on the net, try youtube? *shrug* it IS a theory lucky, anything could happen, it's just like the universe theory, they KNOW it's separating, everything's getting farther from where it should be, but they also fear that instead of the planets and systems being shot out into many directions (just like an explosion), everything could be sucked in into the starting point, the centre of the big bang, it's just the same with the moon it could be shot out into space, or collide with the earth.

and about the ice age, it happened once, when mankind wasn't contributing to the deterioration of the natural order, it's just safe to assume it's gonna happen again. besides, mabus explained some things there, you could look into it, so it's not foggy

and thanks stappy XD i didn't mean that but ok ^^

it's indeed impossible to think buying those new cars will help any, it's not that simple, there are a lot of things we have to do in order to save the planet, and even if we did them, which i'm sure most of us will ignore (not talking about any group specifically, but human kind in general), i think we're in a point where there's no turning back...

Because this IS branching off the other thread, i'm quoting from it.

Aruko wrote:
I agree with Tsuki about the global warming...yes it is natural...but people are making it worse and if everyone doesnt start helping out in there own little ways its not gonna be good XD

Everything gets worse all the time. I mean, agreed, we're a definite catalyst in the process. But you also have to consider that we are only a catalyst, not the problem nor the reason. We should cut back on how much we waste and use up, but i simply think that everyone is being stupid. Ok, theirs a hole in the ozone. I agree, we're making it bigger and not helping it get smaller. But who can say we actually PUT it there. you really wanna save the ozone? Then kill all the cows. go... do it. They're hurting it too. Would you? No. It's not their fault their hurting it. It's something natural.... natural. N-a-t-u-r-a-l. Now, if we stop polluting as much as we do, will we be able to stop the problem? No. Can we slow it down? Yes. And i'm all for slowing down the process (I don't like tans XD). But I am NOT the reason the o-zone is depleting, nor is anyone else. We are the reason it's going faster, but not the reason it happens. Cows have been around a lot longer than cars, blame them if anything else.

And on a side note, if the world is warming up, how come it SNOWED last MAY in ILLINOIS?

And about hurricanes from a few posts back: Ok, i can see that happening. But i'm also starting to believe that we're all screwed. I mean, i could blame GW with hurricanes. But erm.... anyone wanna explain the earthquake thing? Cause i'm seriously starting to think we're just all gonna die pretty soon.

Earthquakes are nachral.

.
.
.

and...um...I think we should just work harder to invent new things for the future before we do too much damage to the world.

And it never snowed in Vancouver all winter; averaged about 12 degrees celcius...

Ummm... Crazed? I have no clue what you are talking about? I believe I made this thread in the Serious Discussion thread, so Fun's topic of his trees would be unrandomized...

@Lucky...

This is what I was talking about... Not quite what I had seen/read but it's quite a nice layed out site:
http://www.davidsuzuki.org/Climate_Change/science/conveyor.asp

So you don't have to read:
Quote:

"Global warming" may cause severe local cooling

It is well accepted that the earth - as a whole - is warming as a result of human activity. Ironically, the lessons of distant earth history show that warming may cause a sudden drop in temperature around the North Atlantic.

Computer models with elevated greenhouse gas concentrations tend to show a warming and freshening (i.e. reduced saltiness) in the northern North Atlantic ocean. This simply results from a combination of global warming, changes in rainfall patterns, and melting glaciers. But after a period of warming, the models predict a weakening or complete halt of the NADW formation, similar to the situation during pulses of sudden cooling tens of thousands of years ago.

The North Atlantic, showing Greenland and Iceland, where a dramatic loss of saltiness is currently taking place. From Dickson et al. in Nature, April 2002.

A distressing confirmation of the models has recently emerged. Measurements of the saltiness of the North Atlantic show that the region has been growing gradually fresher over the past 40 years. The rapidity and extent of freshening came as a surprise to oceanographers - the change is equivalent to a 3-4m cap of freshwater appearing over a broad area of the northern North Atlantic. If this continues, the resulting loss of density could prevent sinking, and short-circuit the NADW within decades.

Judging from records of the distant past, this could be disastrous for eastern North America and western Europe. Average temperatures could plunge by 5 degrees C - for comparison, this is about the same difference as between the global average temperature today and during the last Ice Age, when Canada lay beneath 3000m thick glaciers. The resulting colder, snowier winters would require new infrastructure, damage crops and shorten the growing season. The costs associated with such a change would be enormous.

crazed, i don't see how cows come into this thread, i really don't XD cows don't pollute, if anything their poo is good for the grownd and plants. on the other hand, cars are becoming a massive problem, both for air pollution and because of the noise.
you're right, global warming is a natural proccess, but that doens't mean we shouldn't give a sh*t about it and just continue doing things as we have been doing them, letting kids do whatever they want (playing and hurting the small trees and plants), let anyone litter wherever and so on.
and i believe all of us said we are not the cause, but we're certainly helping, things that should have happened 50 years from now are happening now, we're changing the natural order of things, and even when there are people who're doing their best to get things back to normal, a small grain of sand won't change anything by itself.
and while i believe we're indeed doomed to disappear, you shouldn't worry about it, perhaps we'll have a third world war that will end up in the destruction of human kind, and we won't get to see the planet dying by our hand; and yes i mean by our hand, it's no longer natural when we're helping the proccess
...
i was gonna say lotsa things XD but that's it for now XD i need to put my ideas in order, it seems i'm not making much sense, sorry if it's that way =P

Haven't you ever read that cow's..... released digestive gases (if you get what i mean) cause the ozone to deplete?

And it's not like i'm saying to kill trees and litter (trees are nice and litter is gross). But i'm saying that everyone's freaking out too much about it. I mean, if i forget to put a plastic bottle in the "commingled" bin, i get about 3 people telling me about all the trees i just killed.

I'm not saying that i don't care about the environment. I'm just saying, we all need to take a step back and breath for a few seconds.
