German Federal Election 2009
The results are in and it looks like the left has been very unsuccessful this time around. It's a historical low for the Social Democrats, and I'm glad that the new government will be centre-right, where Angela Merkel won't have to make stupid leftist compromises like before. Now she'll get more room to act.
What's your take on this?

It's been all over the news lately. I am not a big supporter of any politician, political party etc, I don't have a strong belief in any of them. However, I really admire the opinions and ideas of Angela Merkel. I am glad that she has been given the opportunity to be more free in her actions.
Do you think al-Qaeda's videos contributed to the result of the election?

Could you elaborate on what you like about her opinions?
I don't know if the al-Qaeda videos had any effect on the election, but what I do know is that Germany is moving away from the political left once and for all. I would like to see more from the NPD though, and their eventual entry into the Bundestag.

Well, I don't memorize what her exact words were in interviews or conferences. I generally like her chancellorship. She is able to make some rational decisions in a very irrational economic time. Fortunately, I don't think there will be big economic issues anymore, even though now the Liberals are in power as well. She doesn't want to solve everything by war and violence, and knows how to smooth international relations, like the American-German relations, despite the opposition of Germany to the war in Iraq. She simply doesn't have the "American opinions".
Overall, I think Angela Merkel and Vladimir Putin are the most intelligent and pragmatic politicians.
I apologize for not going deep into this, like I mentioned before; I am not a big fan of politics and what has been happening with Silvio Berlusconi lately only makes me less fan of it .

I also happen to be a big fan of Vladimir Putin, as well as Nicolas Sarkozy and Silvio Berlusconi. Charismatic leadership tends to unite the country.
And it's true that Merkel has a way of keeping a cool head through the crisis.

Yeah, Sarkozy is great, I am a fan of him as well. Berlusconi is great as well, but there are always question marks around his name and these days he seems to be more concerned about his personal life than the more important issues.

Actually, it's the media that is more concerned with his personal life, than his politics. Big difference.

He controls the media
That's why people are even more pissed at him these days, people here are protesting at his most recent actions. No one knows how many millions of euros he spent to end these scandals.

Damn you really got me there, how could I forget haha
I have to agree that his shares within the media are relatively unproportional considering he is the Prime Minister, but you have to admit that he has taken up the role of 'father of the nation', and he's good at it! Leaders with his charisma and caliber are rare these days, and the people trust him (albeit much less lately).
On another note, the Irish referendum on the Lisbon Treaty has been passed meaning that we are moving closer to an EU superstate (yay), meaning that petty state nationalism is no more. Finally a unified Europe speaking with one voice in the world. Napoleon and Hitler failed to unite Europe, but the Union succeeded. What are your thoughts on that?
(I meant for this to be a general political thread, on contemporary issues in Europe. Meaning we don't have to stick to the German federal election.)

Well I did say he is a great politician, without him we would be in a much worse financial situation. So you don't need to defend him.
Rejecting the treaty for the second time would only lead Ireland's economy into deeper crisis. Therefore, I think the Irish voted "Yes" this time because the pressure from the other 26 European countries spread more fear among them. I am a supporter of the Lisbon treaty and anything that would bring the European countries closer, thus I don't really care why the voted yes as long as they did. I am not sure whether Poland and Czech have voted yet or no, but I hope they don't cause more problems or delay. It must have been annoying to the British that Ireland gets to decide whether to maintain their EU membership or not.
In my opinion, the worst thing that can happen now is Tony Blair becoming president.
(I think you can change the subject by editing your first post.)
