Level up outside mideel until your about level 60 and then level up in the crater.. also you could use hp plus materia to increase your odds of surviving in there.
Exp. plus materia always handy to have

in the room with the magic pots they give you 8000 exp per kill and the movers give you 2400 ap and 1/10th of a million gil lol and you can morph tomberrys into ribbons
