Final Fantasy and graphics

i've noticed that Final fantasy has changed much over the years and games.

in the begining it was just making a good and fun game with a great story.

lately though it seems that its more about the "Emotion" and "surealness" of the game and graphics.

call me old fasioned, but the Pre-3d FF i liked the most, they left much to your imagination and plopped you into a large world and said "Go"

FFVII started with the 3d graphics and still had that open endedness that is in the classics. VIII restricted that a little more but still gave you freedom. around FFIX and FFX i noticed that i was just doing the battles and running in a large movie. (a good movie though)

to each his own taste, im just saying i would love to see a new FF that was 2d again.

lol I really like running through a movie like that lol I mean you get to make some decisions and stuff lol I guess its cause I have this thing when I see a character my mind is set on how they look and I can't seem to use my imagination lol I guess it just doesn't work when it comes to games lol my imaginations works alot when it comes to reading and writing stories though lol

Yeah, the games have definitely become more... structured, I guess you could call it. It's less of your adventure and more of watching the adventure of Cloud or Tidus or whoever.

Yeah I also think that all of the areas are linear, you do not feel that you are in a huge world since you cannot manually fly the airship or any other vehicle to go where you want. This may just be due to the Playstation's hardware restrictions though.

really.. 2d is very pretty.. on the PS1 if you look at it now and try to play a 3d game your head explodes from just it trying to be ahead of its time.

over time our expectations for a 3d game will increase, but our standards for a 2d game remain relatively the same.

make a new 2d game utilizing new hardware for extremely high resolution sprites and fluid animations and then you have a HD2D game that wont age a bit.

i guess what im trying to say is... 2d isint bad, its just underused.

The older games used to have to focus on gameplay because graphics were, for the most part, at a standard. Instead, they had to focus on making the best gameplay with the best replay value.

Due to this, the older games are often much better than the newer games.

Ironically although games were a lot better and a lot more fun with tons of replay value back in the day, a lot of people didnt play games as much. Back then when you said that you were a gamer people thought that were you were a geek, but now everyone has a game that they play, including girls. Now they say how awesome the overhyped Halo game is, so it must be that the majority of people only like graphics since it seems to be so popular in this generation.

Sure realistic games are cool, but I really miss the fun nonstop action of the 2D scrollers. I think that is why I liked the Playstation so much since it offered a bit of everything, now it is all 3D realism and nothing more. However it is not the developers fault, because there have been a few games that tried to bring back the old school gameplay and received bad reviews from game reviewers stating that they dont want sidescrollers or old school gaming to come back.

speaking of nonstop action, i remember playing contra. oh man, that game is crazy (forget which one it was) but i just dont have the reflexes to win anymore. me and a friend played co-op mode, each of us with 99 lives (which we cheated to get) and we still didnt win. good times.

did.. did you just insult my halo?

sure the story stinks.. and the PC version dident make any sense... but the gameplay was GOLD.

Halo2 had a just as bad story, and thankfuly dident have a PC version (as again that would make no sense).. and the gameplay is even better. heck you can even make your own games, thats how cool it is.

but enough about Halo. back on topic (dang its easy to get distracted)

my favorite of favorites Old school game has to be Baldurs Gate. that game had an AMAZING story and countelss replayability.

my favorite Final Fantasy game i believe is FF2... ok i cant remember, its 2 in something...

or maybe its 3... its the one with the metior that slams into the earth and a princess joins you. and for every shard to collect you unlock a new job.

man... i think it was 2....
