NOW I recommend going to the underwater cave on the southeastern edge of the world, where you can get diamond armor and some weapons. Then you can equip a knight again.
AND DON'T YOU GIVE UP ON THE MONK! The monk is THE most powerful attacker in the game. All you have to do is train him, first with claws and such, then, once his job level is high enough, taking them off and letting him fighting barefisted. That's only when his barefisted attack power is higher than his attack power with claws, of course....
And get rid of the ranger. You won't find anything decent for a ranger for a long time...as in, never. The ranger gets useless really quickly.
Remember, the jobs with higher job levels do better. That doesn't mean they're better jobs.
Have a white mage/red mage (I reccomend the white mage), knight, monk, and maybe something else, like a black mage or geomancer, or maybe even a bard or viking, for the fourth member. Maybe you can have two red mages to double healing power during bosses and increase attack power during normal fights! I mean, if you're smart, you're going to give up any healers for a devout later on....
Oh yeah, and btw, in the DS version the monk gets a better job-master item, which makes it have more defense AND magic resistance than a knight who has a ribbon.
And as for Geos, I didn't really use them much...so I don't know. I don't think they have too much good equipment though....
the game is kinda hard but i was a lvl 64 (all of them at the end ^^)
you should definately have a devout, summoner with bahamur and at least one ninja throwing shurikens at the COD, but i had a knight with full diamond and the exculibur and ragnarok as the last charater, the COD went down in less than 6 moves

they were hard for me too, but then i just went for the earth crystal and got those jobs den fought them and won easily (but only cuz i had a ninja with some shurikens ^^)
