FF7 Before Jenova
What was Gaea like before Jenova crashed into it?
I had an idea for a prequal to this game when I was in middle school or high school.
I drew inspiration from Aerith's stories, Ifalna and Gast's Recordings, and something Yuffie said on the Highwind. Yuffie said something like, "If materia is the wisdom of the Ancients, why is all materia about battle and war? They fought all the time, I guess."

The Cetra were nomadic peoples, right? Hunter-Gatherers and Chocobo Herders, I guess. Nomadic, tribal societies are more warlike than their Farmer cousins...
So here it is:
Nomadics
*Hunter/Gatherers
*Chocobo Herders
Stationary
*Farmers
*Fishers
The Non-Cetra were probably decended from stationary peoples. I remember someone in the game, Ifalna probably, talking about how humans grew tired of wandering, and built permanent shelters, tho this could also apply to the Lifestream wandering through space.
I got a lot of ideas.

it could be either that or just like the gaia we all know ^-^ except maybe with a bit less shin-ra influence...

Hmm... I I bet they were like Romans in fighting for sport and entertainment... I mean when you can summon a giant dragonesque monster to absorb the sun's rays and shoot a giant beam on energy down on the earth from space... what else you going to use it for, tilling to soil?
Well I gues you could use Neo Bahamut, to clear a forest for farm land...

Maybe the summons existed as elemental spirits that wandered around and did their own thing, mostly ignoring humans and cetra.

True, isn't materia just crystallized life stream and all living things go into the life stream when they die, so Summons could very well have been epic monsters that died and their essence was so (looking for the right word here) that they crystallized?

So here's my interpretation.
The lifestream, the very essence of sentient life, travels through the universe looking for hospitable planets, or planets already harboring some kind of life. The lifestream then nurtures and refines whatever lifeforms already existed or spring up from it's presence, with the end goal being sentient life which exists harmoniously with it's environment.
Jenova is either a completely alien lifeform, or a non-sentient self-replicating thing. I think Ifalna mentions Cetra being infected with a "virus" from the creature from the sky.

Hmmm... Maybe Jenova follows the life stream and destroys the harmony the life stream brings, like yin and yang?

Maybe it feeds on the lifestream, or needs it to reproduce, like a virus needs a host.

or maybe this sorta thing happened over and over again. remember rufus mentioned something about it in AC, if the lifestream is going back and forth then history would repeat itself no matter what ppl from gaia did diferently...so maybe aliens like jenova had been crashing into gaia over and over again...MAYBE and there was always someone there to stop them...

Idea... Jenova is hunting the lifestream, the lifestream is it's food. Maybe there are other Jenovas out there, and other lifestreams.

following the game's philosophy (lol) that could be truth...as far as we know, gaia is the planet that is moved by the lifestream, but maybe the whole FFVII universe is controlled by it. seen that way, there could have been hundreds of jenova's and sephiroth's before the game

Yeah seeing as Sephiroth was basically a tool created to... now correct me if I'm wrong, to recreate Jenova? (To study it or something.... I haven't played in a while... )
Maybe ever bad guy is a product of "Jenova" and the good guys and life "Life stream"...?

It simply was… the planet… and continued to be after Jenova crashed into it …
I think there are other Jenovas out there, since Jenova is an alien and it is possible that other aliens do exist in the place which Jenova came from.
But I don’t think there are other lifestreams or other Sephiroths. My assumption is that there is only one lifestream, one source of spirits, memories, emotions...etc that everything goes back to, even if it was found in two different places; it all goes back to the source. The lifestream would lose its concept if there are many of it. As for Sephiroth, well he was created after many laboratory experiments on Lucrecia and injecting her with Jenova cells, so if those experiments don’t take place on another pregnant woman then the creation of another Sephiroth would probably be impossible...
