Fertility Rate

It's ironic how the majority of people are so worried about the effect of global warming, poverty, desertification, diseases etc, on future generations while the fact is there probably won't be any future generations due to the continuous decline in population growth mainly because the global fertility rates are in general decline. I heard that there is no country in the European Union that has the required fertility rate to keep its population growth stable. Italy has the second, I think the third this year, lowest fertility rate in Europe. It has zero population growth and it is predicted to become below zero in the next fifty years or so, meaning most families these years have either one child or none. Countries like Germany, Russia, Japan, Spain, Czech and others, especially industrialized countries, are facing the same or even worse situations.

Every now and then I hear different statements concerning this subject, mostly from ministers of Western European countries, and how they're going to deal with it, etc. Our government for example started paying women 1000 euros, then 2 500 euros, later it reached 10 000 euros and maybe more to have more than one child, and of course the payment doubles with each additional baby they have. Not only that, the government will be paying for transportation to school, books and other matters children or students may require. I don't blame the families for not wanting to have many children since the prices of rent burn the fires of hell and the cost of living is generally very expensive, which is the reason adults in their twenties and even thirties are still living with their parents. The payments from the governments will definitely encourage families to have more children, but since the workforce is in decline wouldn't those payments cause some sort of an economic crises in the future? Those children will have to "pay their debts" after growing up, a huge financial burden will fall on their shoulders. In addition to the cost of living, which will definitely increase, there will also be a definite massive increase in taxation, so people will barely afford their own basic needs. Financial systems won't take it. I don't know about you but I believe it's an endless cycle.

Another thing, the countries that have a high fertility rates are mostly the countries in Africa where the poorest countries in the world are and people die by thousands from HIV or any other disease, not mentioning the other serious problems in Africa.

So, any thoughts, opinions?!

oooo i never knew anything about this... thanks for posting... its quite scary when you actually realise theres a decrease in fertility rates... i can see it around me now i think about it because the majority of my friends and myself are only children...

i think it's wrong to pay people to have children because in the future of those children they'll diffinately have to 'return' (sorry if that the wrong word) the money back to the government in tax's... also i don't think thats a very nice environment to be brought up in because i bet a lot of families would have children only for the money and that up bringing must scar the child...

We won't run into an econimoc crisis because of the "baby bonus" because that money comes from the taxes. Sure, other govermental services will be reduced, but the economy will be saved in the long run.

Think about it, right now, all the baby boomers are retireing and constantly damanding pentions from the government; the work force is ultimately reduced as well. So if the population crisis continues, we will just end up with a bankrupt country. Tat's why encouraging children is a good thing. The government is willing to risk it all so that there would be a few more workers in the future. Also, countries with very low fertility rate are often the countries that rely on immigration. Canada, for example, fails to replace their own parents because most families have only one child, but still has a growing population based on the sheer quantity of immigrants comming in.

The main problem is overconsumption of reasources in the developed countries, especially those that follow right wing "class" standards, which is ironic because then a lot of their people (the "lower class") is also starving along with the other developing countries. What's more ironic is that the "upper class" is now suffering from overconsumption (mainly independant obesity).

This whole senario could be easily fixed, but apparently the uppe class still prefers the situation that they're in and decides not to (because today, most of the power belongs to those with most of the money no matter how much we deny it).

So overall, the main issue is reasources and if we can actually afford to feed the baby boomers as well as a new, growing, generation. And you're right, with desertification, desiese, poverty, etc. It is going to be quite a challange to even sustain a balance of food growth and consumption.

I agree with you Lucky Star... to a certain degree. Yes, it could be possible to save the economy with more than just few sacrifices from both sides, citizens and the government. However, saving the economy means that governments will have to depend more and more on immigration, like you explained, but immigration has nothing to do with the local fertility rate of a country, which basically means that fertility rate will continue to decline, yet the population will not change and maybe even increase because of immigration like what's happening in Canada. My point is that the individuals of cultures with low fertility rates are declining and will continue to do so, many cultures will disappear in the next decades. Yes there probably would be so many people in a country, but no one is originally from it. I would choose the survival of a culture over saving the economy, that's where I am coming from; how will governments provide the needs of everyone in the country after losing all its resources by offering payments to those who have babies and while emigration is growing? They would make immigrants pay more taxes?! Or make the citizens pay more taxes? Which will lead us to that cycle again.

I don't think it's as simple as a matter of balancing resources. Let's not forget that the population of the world is very large and is increasing, the planet doesn't have enough resources to sustain a population this large. The planet needs fewer not more people, I guess it's a matter of a survival issue after all. The countries with high fertility rates will survive and the rest of the cultures will be buried.

You're missing the natural return of an individual paying taxes. I lose approximately 15k a year in taxes. So if the government paid my parents 10k to have me... They are making a killing off of me as an investment.

There a lot of things these days that do make you infertile. I find it funny how young children are given cell phones when the inherent danger of using them is so high! Hell I don't even carry mine in my pocket and try to keep it away from "the boys".

Not only that the food we eat (not everyone but the vast majority) has so many synthetics (again unless you eat organics, real organics).

As well there is a rise on wireless internet. Those wave and wave lengths, I don't know if they've been studied enough to see what effects are on the human body.

STI's and STD's (You can cure and infection, you cannot cure a disease you can only treat it) I say would factor in as well, there is a ridiculous number of people with HPV out there and don't know it.

I agree with lucky star on a lot of his points, but again baby bonuses have been around for ages, my mom had them when I was young for us (5 children) and this is in Canada. Stops when you're 18 and as of yet the tax man isn't knocking at my door!

The funny thing I've thought about is if we all returned to a barter system or at least a agriculture based society (i.e. A lot more people farming with the use of modern tech. They be so many babies! You need the extra help around the farm to keep it going so you have more kids, I come from a farming community, a lot of families were farmers, and they always had at least 4 kids if not more).
