Fat Princess

Get this game now.

ok, that was the short version... here is the long one

this game is freaking amazing, its a medieval capture the flag game with princesses instead of flags, your goal is to capture back your princess that is in the other castle's dungeon before they capture your princess. this sounds simple at first, and to be honest it is somewhat simple. to prevent the other team from taking the princess from your dungeon, you can feed her magical cake. this cake makes her gain weight and become cumbersome to carry, to the point that the person carrying her can barely move at all. you must rely on your allies to help you carry her back to your base at that point, the more helping, the faster you travel.

there are 5 classes, each with one upgrade.
Worker: Standard HP (4). You gather resources (Wood/Ore) Build Defenses (Castle Doors, Catapult) Build offensive buildings (ladders on enemy castle, bridges for shortcuts) and upgrade buildings (which upgrade the classes) and faster carry speed.
Upgraded Worker: Same as before, but can throw bombs in addition

Warrior: Has the most HP (6), has a shield to deflect projectile attacks, Spin attack
Upgraded Warrior: No shield, but twohanded weapon with a charge and uppercut.

Archer: Crossbow Range attack, second highest hit points (5)
Upgraded Archer: Uses a Rifle instead of a Crossbow

Wizard: Standard HP (4) Can throw fireballs, or send out a fire shockwave
Upgraded Wizard: Throws Ice, or send out an ice shockwave, Ice will temporarly freeze enemies

Cleric: Can heal one target quickly, or send out a healing shockwave
Upgraded Cleric (Dark Cleric): Drain HP from one target, or use an Area of Effect Curse.

the graphics of the game resemble what looks like a handdrawn game with a very unique texture style. its pleasing to the eye and resemble a bloody and limb-strewn cartoon.

The gameplay is very fast paced, you need to work as a team to upgrade quickly and storm the castle. each team has 16 players (total for 32 player games) and at times this can feel like a bit much combined with the 5 second respawns. there are towers midpoint across the map to give a defensive location to sit and rest. restoring HP can only be done by a cleric, or not moving for a second or two and you sit down. when sitting down you regain HP fairly quickly (1 HP/sec) but it does take a second to get back up, so being ambushed is a possibility.

don't let the name dissuade you, it may have "Princess" in the title, but it is a highly enjoyable game. the only problems im currently having with it are network problems (which should be fixed soon hopefully) its frustrating to have a host of the game leave and then watch as the game shuts down while it tries to "Change Hosts" and unfortunately all the trophies are online based, and the game has to finish to be awarded trophies so getting a difficult trophy and having the host leave can be a frustrating experience.

the gameplay is varied and fun, and the multiplayer is entertaining and replayable.

Before i even read what you said thor, i just wanted to say that after playing... maybe two games online, my first impressions were not all that great. the added connection problems didnt help my mood either.

But my complaints arent really about the game, though at first i thought it was. its merely that nobody seems to be working as a team. If we all had headsets maybe this could be corrected to a degree, but right now, its all the crazy people just running around.

I think, in about 2-3 weeks time, we are going to see a big change in the online community. Most people (the ones running around and being a one man army (that loses) are going to find something new to play. the rest of us left will probably have a great grasp of the game and we can work together and use strategy.

anyway, that was my first two cents.

either way, people should by this, as long as they play to play with the rest of us ^^

T-Rex i agree,
the connection problems are killing the birth of this game, they need to issue a patch soon as online games are unreliable and buggy.

teamwork can be done with headsets, ask for some guys to come with you while you take the back route to the princess and you will find some.

yeah there needs to be more people playing this game, i have been anticipating this game for awhile and i missed the launch window by a week (came out July 30th)

Yeah i picked it up last night actually.

One good thing, psn seems to be pretty good about patch release dates. as in the approval and distrebution process is only about 2 weeks or so. not sure how that matches up with 360 games but yeah. soon indeed.

i just beat the single player so i have a grasp on the basics, though i find myself ignoring some of the classes. ill make a big effort to change that.

oddly enough, i find a lot of joy in being the worker lol.

if I ever see you online playing ill do my best to get in a game youre in. Im usually playing something after the 11pm to midnight marker (east coast).

edit: speak of the devil. i saw you online and tried to join your game that DID have open spots like 8 times. no luck. though the next game i joined randomly worked first time. grrrrr.

if it was today afternoon, that was when i was pissed off about getting disconnected from servers when our team was about to win, so i just hosted my own game and had tons of fun.

i LOVE the worker, he's fast, can build ladders, and best of all, Bombs are *!

yeah the game is definately buggy, when i ended my server, anyone who was connected just froze, and the NPC's kept on going, my UI disappeared and no menu commands would work. it was odd.
so i grabbed the princess, ended the game, and nothing happened...
bugs piss me off >.< hope a patch comes out soon, they have alot of networking bugs to fix first, but fixing some of these other bugs would be awesome.

yo yo. patch is live. havent tried it but i just dl'ed it for late rin the night.

patch notes from titan:

Quote:
Patch Notes

Our primary focus with this patch was to improve connections and reduce lag. We also addressed the AoE scoring exploits, a few other scoring imbalances, and made minor tweaks that should reduce stalemates. Here are the details:

* The server selection heuristic has been modified so that ping time has been more heavily weighted when selecting potential matches. This will result in players being connected to games in such a way that game population and ping are more evenly weighted.
* Newly hosted servers will be more attractive to potential clients and thus fill up more quickly. The change will also better distribute connection attempts among servers and thus reduce failed attempts.
* Potential servers will be given less time to respond to ping requests. This should speed up that portion of the connection process.
* Selected servers will be given more time to establish a connection, resulting in fewer failed attempts.
* The connection code is less sensitive to packets coming back out of order. This was a cause of failed connections.
* Ice Mage and Dark Priest AoE scoring has been adjusted from 10 points to 2 points per enemy affected.
* Non-worker resource return has been reduced from 20 points to 10 points.
* Feeding the princess has been reduced from 20 points to 15 points.
* Castle door hit points have been reduced slightly from 30 to 25.
* The Princess’ calorie burn has been increased at weight stage 2, 3, and 4. Calorie burn was previously 2 per second at all stages. Stage 2 is now 4 per second, stage 3 is 8 per second, and stage 4 is 12 per second.

How To Play the Patch

Our experience using the patch is that successful connections occur more than 75% of the time on the first attempt. Selected servers are more fit, and so lag is reduced. A number of other problems attributed to lag are, as a result, also less prevalent. We expect server host migration to work more consistently.

The community will have to find a new balance in terms of host versus player distribution. Because of changes to the heuristic, there may be more servers with a moderate population of players, and fewer servers that are nearly full or nearly empty. The ideal ratio of servers to players is probably about 4 servers per 100 players. Unless you have a spectacular connection, try finding a game or jumping in first. If games are full and you’re having a hard time connecting, and you have a decent connections and a good ISP – by all means host. If your connection is moderate or poor, though, you won’t have many joiners. As with any peer to peer game – many empty games means too many hosts. Few, full games means not enough.
Future Patches & Updates

In future patches or updates, we will address other bugs and issues. Again, we wanted to get this out as fast as possible, and so changed only what we could safely and by last Monday afternoon. Down the road, we will address less common and less severe issues including: disappearing princesses, broken hat machines, migration issues, and the rank system. We may also address other features and balance issues.

Thanks for sticking with us through this crazy first week. There is more great stuff to come. Have a fantastic weekend and see you online!

- Titan Dev

update: So ive tried it patched and all. Id say the 75% estimate is spot on. maybe better assuming you have a good connection. Im on wirless and i was getting like 80% connected on the first try. even had a moment where a game started, the host dropped out and it successfully changed hosts.

also another time where the host left, it didnt get a new host but in the 40 something second count down it connected me to a new room ending the same match and put me in there. pretty cool.

also, my best score online in one game is 18XX. worker baby, worker.

beat me to posting about the patch.
there are still a few bugs, but this patch makes the online play feasible, rather than before the patch.

they are planning more network patches with some bug-fixes next, it may take a month but on the FP forums they told everyone to expect it next.
