Evony
Yes I know the adverts for this game are mostly half-naked womens saying "Play with me" but that is not the reason I started playing (a female friend of mine plays and she wanted me to play so I did, kinda a push over like that).
Anyway, I'm on NA3 (of the AgeII; some big upgrade) named Houseton, Alliance ElfMagic (50K prestige min.)

It's like Civilization kinda... gameplay wise.

it is also a scam...
the entire game content was stolen from another game company and the guy is selling any information he gets from these servers to anyone who will buy it. virtually everything that the game uses, from images to code, is stolen from some other website, game or source.
google "evony scam"
the scariest part is that people give him their credit card number for arbitrary in-game items...
anyway, a more legit game of the same feel and play-style is LordOfUltima.com, its being made by an EA games subsidiary, and doesn't sell your information to literally anyone.

I can't recommend that game either. I played it for a few months in 2009, was in the top 15 with over 1 mil prestige and was forced to spend 4-6 hrs a day just to feed my armies which consumed 3 mil food per day. Its designed to suck the life right out of you by making you spend too much time online. 
also FYI: I did have some credit card issues with a 3rd party vendor (UK+USA based) but not when I used PayPal.

Most of the graphics are, or were, stolen from the Age of Empires and Civilization series. There are a lot of descriptions in it that were stolen from Civilization as well.

i play it, it's not bad but it's not great and yeah you have to play alot to keep your cities armies fed, mine are at -3.5 mill
and i dont use credit cards on it cause i heard it wasnt safe.
and after about a month of playing youve basically mastered the game, but there will always be someone better than you playing cause they have more time to play *cough*Emerald of St Peterburg*cough*
i'm on server 130 of age 1 alliance pengleng
only play now cause i can meet a ton of new people and it helps my world studies class to have friends in other countries.
