it all depends on your DM, if he is good, the game will be fun, if they arent any good, then the best part will be making a character.

the game is really entertaining if you get a good group together and play constantly, over the last year i have been hosting the same game of D&D which is by far my best game so far.

what i mean is, they keep the characters until they die, then they bring in new ones to join the old ones, there is no world shift, they are always in the same world, so if they make a character that turns out to be famous, they can hear about that character on their new one.

there are DM's that prefer combat, there are DM's that prefer story. generally a good DM will keep combat at a low, and try to always make it optional.

advice for you: enjoy it, bask in it, even if your first game doesn't turn out great you are still participating in one of the most complex, diverse, and feature rich RPG's ever created.

hours.
the most time consuming aspect is battle, and if the battle is not done well by the DM it can feel like a waste.

for example, in my battle, there is one guy who does not think about what he is going to do next until it is his turn.

so everyone goes through their turns fairly quickly, then his turn comes up and he says "Um, hold on" and begins to thumb through the book of spells while we wait.
eventually he decides that casting a spell isint wise quite yet so he "Holds his turn" and waits for his turn to come up again. where he again looks through the book and might cast a spell or not.

the problem lies in the fact that he doesn't think before his turn while everyone else is going what he will do.

when you get someone like that in your group, tell them, and ask them to think beforehand what needs to be done.

battle can go quick, but it may take awhile, especially if it is your first time.

im not sure how it will go for you, the game can be complex, and generally when we have somone new to the game join us it can be very overwhelming for them. so really just take your time, choose a class that is simple (Fighter and Ranger are the simplist)

Hmmm, how would a bard (in terms of battle) do?

Anyway, I think I'm not yet ready to spend on the stuff yet. My friends are way too undecided as of now.
As for the battles taking very long to do, I think that's gonna happen frequently to my group (if we ever start) since we're all newbies.

heh, i have dont them all, but not at the same time....

noone dresses up, the occasional wizards hat may show up, we dont play in the basement but rather upstairs on my family's dining room table.

the only person to do voices is me, and that usually my horrible scottish accent for the dwarves ("Wut Ye talkin bout you crazy pointy eared lugger?" "i may be stout but me heart is in the blade, and the blade be in you!")

what is expected is that you roleplay, meaning, if you have scanned the Monster Manual and know that the creature you are fighting is immune to magical damage, you dont just start having your wizard melee randomly, you have to have your character figure it out first and THEN have him wail on the creature.

A good game is one where each character has secrets against the other, because everyone metagames, its just going to happen, and it can ruin the fun for either a few players or the DM himself (he has to have fun too you know)

oh yah.

-note-
one of my friends who used to be in our group, never learned the rules, and left. returned last august after about 4 years, he has been in our group ever since.

recently he decided he would give his hand at DM'ing, he doesnt know many D&D rules and really wanted to try it, so with my advice we got him on his own game.

he did something that really supprised me and was really intellegent on how to learn to play D&D.

DONT play D&D, play your own made-up-rules-version of it. and slowly integrate the official rules into your game. this makes it a great learning curve for the group, lets everyone learn together, and lets you all decide how you feel about certain rules put into the game.

he is running a modern-day zombie outbreak game, where the D&D rules dont apply too well, and damn, if it isint quite good for his first DM session.
