DSP processors
you all know me, im fairly Pro-Xbox around these parts.
well i've read up on the processors that sony is putting into its Cell processor (titled DSP) if you dont know what they are, they are basicly cheep processors used in DvD players to decode video and audio extremely fast without having to buy a fast CPU. thats why the little 133mhz processor in your DvD player can play in 480p without hitching. (though advanced DvD players have faster models)
ANYWAY these processors arent good at gaming. but rather at playing movies.
and i was thinking to myself lately, "What difference would having 7 DSP processors make in a game."
if you dont know whats in the cell processor:
7 DSP processors (sony calls them SPE, which is ironic, as SPE are worse than DSP, so im upgrading them to DSP since sony will undoubtfuly customize the SPE to work like a DSP)
1 Power PC CPU.
well last night i finally figured it out
WHAT THE PS3 WILL BEABLE TO DO AND THE 360 CANT DO
imagine that scene from FFVII where you beat the boss and it goes into a prerendered CGI. you can tell when it goes into the CGI mainly because theres a single frame missing (or its jumpy or whatever, you can notice it)
with 7 DSP processors the PS3 would beable to mold realtime gaming into a prerendered CGI with a transition. this means that when you beat the boss, the graphics would slowly improve until they were a prerendered clip.
in effect, this would be a great use of the extra 20gb available on Blu-ray is to fill it with CGI, thus when you open your menu, the menu could be a CGI and still have some minor interactive parts.
its the only advantage in gaming i can think of having a DSP processor rather than a PPC processor (power PC, the kind in your computer) for example, a PPC processor would beable to calculate an AI path much easier as it has general instructions to accomplish that feat. while the DSP processor would have to preform AI with a series of complex calculations just to get around its programming barrier. a large problem with DSP is that they dont have any use for RAM. they dont have very many instruction sets for doing processess from ram. this would mean that the central CPU in the cell (the only PPC processor in it) would have to divide tasks among the processors.
in essense that would make it one freaking fast CPU rather than 8 seperate CPU's. but then again im getting into unfamiliar territory as the specifics of how the cell works have not yet been released and will most likely change for the better (god knows sony doesnt want 1 superfast CPU, it wants 8 moderately fast processors.)
just as a disclaimer. yes it will be powerful. yes it will be fast. i tried to mention the xbox as little as possible in this post to keep any idea of console wars out of this thread.
