Do you think we will enter a recession/depression?
BTW does this also effect Europe as well or only the US? In case you do not know what I am talking about there is talk all over the news about how the US economy is suffering. So I wonder is the reason people are not spending as much anymore is due to gas prices alone? I admit that I am no longer a spender all of money goes to this site and medical bills It has been a long time since I have purchased a personal item (which was an HDTV over a year ago). Since new products are so expensive now and not a jaw dropping improvement over the technology that was out a year ago, there is no reason for me to buy something new so perhaps other consumers feel the same way which is one reason why spending is down.

The us economy has been suffering for forever. Ever since the clinton signed that stupid law allowing free trade in Mexico, the average working class person has suffered (though upclass has never been richer). our country's been bankrupt since day one, but this stupid war upped it to 9.1 trillion.

Here in Argentina prices are going over the roof... What you notice when you buy new stuff is that, for example, a TV that came out a couple years ago should be cheaper now than then, because technology´s kinda obsolete; but the prices stay and every new artifact costs more. So things cost like three times what they cost before, and salaries haven´t risen that much
I don´t know the actual cause of that, but it gets harder to live everyday like this.

yep yep I think we are headed for a recession mostly due to the housing market bubble busting and we haven't seen the $100 a barrel oil prices at the pump yet. When I see stores like CompUSA closing down forever it makes me think this too.

Yeah I am so glad that everything was cheap back when I was 16 with a $7 dollar per hour job at Walmart. If things cost what they do now back then I probably wouldn't have been able to afford the gas just to go to work! BTW I haven't heard anyone else mention this but do you think that the internet plays a role in less spending as well? Remember back in the day when everyone bought $15 - $19 CDs? Now they just download the songs they like for $0.99 or get them illegally for free. I remember seeing a lot of media stores in my city go out of business due to that. Also back then I couldn't stay alone at home for more than a couple of hours before being bored out of my mind. That is why I was always going out and travelling but the internet replaces that boredom so that may also be the reason for lack of RL sales.

yeah, i know a few people that get their music legally. i have the cd's my sister bought, so about 97% of my collection is legal. And the internet helps a little actually since you can sell stuff that you were about to throw away for some money. And by doing that, the people that actually want it will pay a good price for it.

If I had the money the US would be thriving XD. I cant keep a doller in my pocket for one day. But really... what can even be done about this? Maybe things might change with a new pres. in office? Maybe things will change with the next generation of kids growing up (10 years maybe).

ehmm, i don't understand the first word, i do however noticed the gas prices are getting higher here in europe as well, even though with the low dollar, and the strong euro we shouldn't realy be noticing much difference, but i think they're doing that in an attempt to make europe one, by making the prices the same everywhere
i can't realy say if things in general are getting more expensive here, i don't realy think so though, with the low dollar things to buy from the USA should be cheaper as before...
i actually do notice this world is going to hell, if i look at politics in holland, the major concern seems to be muslim extremists, and there's 1 political party that wants to act against it, but they're demanding it too hard straight away
example:
"Ban the quoran from the country"
so the rest of the political parties do not want to give in with that, because they're afraid of a civil war between muslims and the rest of the country, but because they don't give the 1 political party willing to act against it their will, more people are voting for that one so it'll be heard...
i'm fearing the most when that guy actually gets what he wants
here in portugal i'm not seeing a lot of difference, because the prices were already high compaired to the salaries before all of this happened
and i pray to god north korea wont give terrorists that nuke they developed

*sighs* i seriously think our generation should just kick out the adults and take it for ourselves. A whole bunch of people say they won't vote for Barack because he's inexperienced. But today's generation loves him because he's normal, he's fun, and he has the ideas we've all been hoping for. Clinton and huckabee keep saying that they'll do what's best for the children (clinton even cried over it), but it's only been like, what, 30 years since they were our age? i say give the job to the one who knows what the kids and the parents want. He did an excellent job as my senator, and i'll trust him for the rest of my days as the leader of my country.

Wing, a recession is a significant economic decline throughout a region for at least a few months.
It's not much different than a depression, it just doesn't have as great of an effect. It usually is the main cause in depressions though, at least in America where our lives are so greatly ran by the penny.
And I can see this depression coming into America very soon, if it hasn't already come. It's certain corporations like Wal Mart that are absolutely destroying competitors and the work force is becoming thinner. Wage wise that is, people are settling for littler and littler and I'm worried that by the time that I must look for a job, it might not be too great.

Walmart smells funny and cost more then a lot of the other stores i see. I mean really, 15 bucks for a pair of jeans? I can get a pair that look better and actually go past my ankles for 5 dollars at JCPenny's outlet.

I hope you're kidding. I can't think of any store that sells anything cheaper than Wal Mart. Everything there seems to be about 85% the price of what it should be, or is at other stores.
