Digital Distribution is kicking my ass
ill admit it.. im a game pirate. i download games and play them for free..
i would rarely spend a penny on playing a game. it just felt right, $50 for a new game was outrageous, especially since demo's were either lying about the game content, or not a good representation. and magazenes never gave a good review or prieview that would give me the feeling of if it was worth it or not.
anyway, even though im a game pirate, i find myself buying games online through Steam anyway. i know i have the resources to get these games free. but im not even trying. i find myself buying games from steam that i just have a mild interest in.
but its awesome.
the games are actually quite entertaining, and the best part is that there are no discs to lose, there are no CD keys to reenter every time you reformat your harddrive, there is no 'waiting' screen for the game to install one at a time, at slow ass CD rom drive speeds. there are no discs to put into the computer AT ALL. Each game is automaticly patched at each launch of steam, and in 20 years, if i keep my steam account, i can still play these games that i bought today.
all that combined, i guess its actually worth the time and money. because honestly being a pirate is a time consumer, it takes awhile to locate the cracks, the content, the CD-Key, the NO-Cd-exe, and then burn the thing onto a DvD for archiving incase i ever uninstall the game. not to mention that pirating also means that you cant play online at all.
so steam has converted this pirate. i do appriciate the time it gives me back. and when i rebuild my system with a new harddrive, i KNOW i wont lose all of the games i downloaded through steam, because i can download them easily (rather than having to locate the discs that i had for the games)

i also have to admit that i also buy a TON of xbox live arcade games.. i dont know why, they arent as good as the steam games.. but they are still great time killers (and blood pressure droppers) since they let me truely relax on a game.

aye, i know i know, its what i thought too..
but after i got a job, time is just really important to me, and steam is just easy, cheap and provides everythign that i want from a game immediately (no discs, no disc loading, download the game anywhere, play my game anywhere, keep the game forever and download it whenever, i cant lose steam games)
im not saying buy steam games, but it has got me spending some money on small games that entertain me, plus it doesnt have the Pirate aftertaste.
i will still pirate some singleplayer non-steam games that kinda interest me.

i actually just came up with an idea of some software i could write:
it would take the idea of steam. but it would only list open source games/free ware.
so all of the games would be free to download!
of course content would be managed by me, and i would only put quality open source works in the list. but I'm positive that many games would LOVE such a service.
