digimon - pokemon......the truth?
ok, me and a friend have been having an ongoing debate for ages and still cant agree (even after a couple of internet searches on the phone while in the pub.
the question is...which came first - digimon or pokemon?
my argument is that pokemon may have been released in the west first and became popular first, it was actually created after digimon in japan.
am i right?

If I remember correctly, Digimon did exist in the west as a cyberpet before Pokemon. It just wasn't very well known because those Tamagotchi things pretty much stomped all over it. I still have my Digimon cyberpet, although the batteries in it died almost 9 years ago and haven't been replaced since.

It was planned by Wiz and released by Bandai on June 26, 1997. - Digimon pocket monster thingy
In the United States, the series premiered in August 1999 on the Fox Television Network. - Digimon (Anime)
So, Digimon did technically hit here first game wise, but the Pokemon anime got here before the Digmon anime did.

Actually, if you look at the information Cecil provided and look at your argument provided in your original post, you're wrong. Digimon hit in the west before Pokemon did.

digimon came first, i remember when i was like 3 or 5 i rly dont remember but i watched digimon alot until i pokemon aired ( well maybe pokemon came first but i juts dint know about it) and well game wise i rly dont know but i do know the first videogame i got was a pokemon game and a fiishing game with a gamboy color, so i would have to say digimon first for anime and pokemon for videogame but remember i got no proof of which actually cam first

This issue has already been resolved. Digimon came first in game form as they were released as cyberpets. Pokemon came first as an anime but after the Digimon cyberpet.
