Difficult Games
Now, I have just fired up Monster Hunter - Freedom Unite, And it's difficult!
I know you're probably thinking "Why is that topic worthy?"
Well.. How long has it been since any of you played a Difficult game?
A game that frustrates you in about ten minutes and makes you want to put your foot through the tv?
I ask this coz i have noticed a steady decline in game difficulty over the last ten years..
It seems that developers are so scared of frustrating players into quiting the game early, that they are 'Dumbing down' the game standards..
Thoughts?

Shadow of the colossus is the hardest game I've ever played (thought to be fair i haven't played that many games). I didn't wanna put my foot through the tv but i just gave up.
From what I've played it seens games have been getting more difficult actually. I was able to finish almost every game I had on N64 but only finished two on my ps2, either quitting or simply getting bored of the rest. Some games like Burnout just had no point in finishing though.
I think it depends on how good the controls are...
One game that was difficult was goldeneye on n64, but because it had good controls and was pretty fun anyway so I kept trying.
But I don't play games for a challenge, i play for fun or a good story.

old style arcade games are the hardest god dammitXD

i always like games like metal slug that keep the old side scrolling 2d style of play they always seem more difficult, especially if you tell yourself to do it either without continues or without losing one life, and there is NO saves
that shiz was hard XD took me a few triesXD

yes, i do happen to know how hard contra is. good times.
and stap, im willing to bet most of your hard time wo colossus was the controls. they werent bad, but they werent very intuitive at all and ass such those first few colossi were ridiculous. not to mention the smaller ones that ran around.
and lately, hard game. megaman 9. they did it 8 bit like it was back in the day and made it gloriously hard. if you dont know which area to go first and second and so on, the bosses are crazy hard. so a little luck is needed if you arent checking faq's.
after that, the game i played that game me a hard time was killzone, but i was playing on the hardest difficulty. it gets crazy.
but i love me a good hard game (most of the time). good thread penalty

i normally...always XD set games to hard now just cos i enjoy more of a challenge, some games do get frustrating as hell though XD like
GOD DAMMIT IS THIS HARD MODE OR IMPOSSIBLE? WHY WOULD THEY MAKE IT THIS HARD?XD
but it makes it all the more satisfying when you beat that last boss, and thats what its all about, if you play a game that was just too easy and finish it, you dont get the same feeling
and i love megaman, so ill be gettin that seifer XD
what i dont get is when poeple play with cheats, especially unlimited health etc. and finish the game, i mean why play it if all you have to do is walk through it, because with unlimited health that is practically what you are doing, my bro does that and then tells me he has finishes this game and that game, and that just well
it doesnt count XD

well the only game i every stooped to codes for was contra lol and you know why.
after that and code time i do after i already beat a game. for instance gta games.
but yeah, megaman 9 will take you right back to like megaman 2. arguably the best megaman game from the past. the music, everything, its like a time machine for christs sake.
and yeah, i can recall myself yell, "this isnt hard its fckin impossible"
i think the last game i said that too was metal gear solid on the ps1 on extreme.
and then metal gear solid 2 on the ps2 when i did it on extreme to get the last of all the dog tags in the game. i havent beaten it to this day and im stuck at the final boos with what almost looks like negative health.

yeah nothing wrong with beating the game first then putting codes in for a samurai sword just to go on a killing spree for fun XD
i only played metal gear solid on the ps1 and that was a loooong time ago i dont think i even knew about hard mode back then XD

you had to beat it on normal to get hard and then beat it on hard to get extreme.
it wasnt very nice to players but i loved it anyway.

Arc Contra is about knowing what the computer is gonna do so you can evade it. If you know it well enough you can beat the game so easily. ^^

Populous. The third or fourth level is pretty much impossible to beat. You'd have a higher chance attempting to break down a solid concrete wall with a toothbrush...a particularly cheap and flimsy one that cost less than 30p from Tesco (or other large supermarket).

I'm still trying to figure out "why" though.
Have the games gotten easier, or have we gotten better?
I for one know that i peaked at about the age of 13-14 and have gotten a bit worse since then.
Back then i could play a video game without worrying about the world around me, and replay a level 500 times just to get that one item that everyone said you can get, but no one has been able to..
In saying this though, i wont deny that there were some extremely easy games back then too, But it just seems that these days there are an abundance..
