I, myself am siding Cloud and I've seen multiple threads like these in the net. All of them argue with equally irrelevant reasons. We shall not compare them by means of their respective gameplay, since it's something that both of them do NOT have in common.
Why I believe Cloud beats Squall is that:
He has been infused with Mako energy and injected with Jenova cells. That totally enhances his strength, as we can see in Advent Children when him and Sephiroth caused major destruction between the buildings and the capability to leap heights as high as skyscrapers. Squall has not been enhanced with any ability whatsoever. It also occurs to me that Squall was incredibly agile when fighting Sephiroth in the Final Fantasy Dissidia trailer. In this case, I would give Squall a draw with Cloud. Nevertheless, Cloud will STILL win Squall because Squall(he did jump off the hill in the end) can NOT jump/maneuver as high as Cloud can and obviously does not have so strong an ability to the extent that he could slice buildings like Cloud and Sephiroth can.
If you look at their mental perspective, they're both equally intelligent. Squall was Balamb Garden's best student and Cloud, although not in 1st Class SOLDIER like he thought he was, Cloud knows a whole load of things that can aid him throughout his quest.(In the beginning, you can ask for a tutorial from Cloud in a building beside Tifa's 7th Heaven). If we look at their ability to overcome their emotions, Squall has a better flexibility, since he is easily influenced by Rinoa. Cloud however, is still gloomy about his incapability to rescue Zack and Aerith in time. Squall wins this round.(We are still talking about FIGHTING, not mental capabilities. This acts as extra information for everybody.)
We shall not discuss how attractive any of them are any further because Cloud and Squall BOTH have the looks.
In terms of limit breaks, we shall not look at Squall's Renzokuken since it acts as an initiative. We shall compare Lionheart with Omnislash instead. It's true that Lionheart does 20 different damages and 15 with Omnislash only. Lionheart wins. But if you look at it further from logic and assume that the damage cap is NOT 9999, but more, you will realize something. Squall hits about 20 times WITH his arms only and with completely no mobility in his body. Cloud however, moves ALONG with his body. if the damage cap was more, I believe that most of you will consider this. Cloud swiftly moves around the foe with his immensely heavy blade and is still capable of performing multiple devastating and extremely speedy slashes. He moves one ENTIRE round, along with his body UP before going down again, and so on and so on.
The rest of you who are willing to defend Squall's rights, please consider your post and try not to post anything seriously irrelevant as I have seen many of them on the net.

Not bad on your supporting statement on Cloud-san, there's quite some topics on this already though. But good points, the reason I'm not replying my own theories is that...I'm tired of repeating all the same posts about this Cloud vs Squall thing.

If you remember Squall's Blasting Zone Limit Break...even Cloud can't do anything against that, wif a movel ike that, Squall could hide in Americe and locate Cloud via GPS and unleash his Blasting Zone. Cloud will be killed without him knowing it...probaly when he's making out with Tifa. Hahaa just a lame joke...

I don't think either of them would win...they're both too angsty. Well if it were the video game Cloud he might win but Advent Children Cloud would probably spend too much time crying about not being able to save Aeris and Squall would cry about whatever the hell it was he was crying about to the unconcious Rinoa on the bridge (I didn't bother to read the entire dialogue or most of Squall's dialogue for that matter (It got repetetive after the first few dungeons)).
Seriously though, if CLoud and Squall were to really fight it out, whoever get the first hit will win, both squall and cloud has 9999 HP and both my squall and cloud can do 9999 hit..erm...probably squall, i remember there was an ability 'initiative' that give you the first hit...i'll just put it on and hit right away...of coz, there is a pre-emptive strike materia...so it goes on. Damage wise, squall will own cloud over his renzokuken + lion heart...cloud's omnislash is just isnt enough.

Yes; it’s very obvious who people prefer in the examples you gave, that’s why no one asks in the first place. Besides; Goofy is a Disney character, Cloud isn’t, not only that; everything about them is the opposite; Goofy is… well goofy and Cloud is … not. He is more like Squall I guess, that’s why people keep comparing between the two of them, or between Cloud and Sephiroth…
However; power is not the only standard. Cloud is obviously stronger than Squall but personally I prefer Squall over Cloud. Most of what Cloud has is power power power and everything else which gives him more power power power… anything else? Barely. Why don’t people make a proper comparing between the two and not basing their opinions on power and only power? That’s the real question. Some may say that Squall is overly emo… well; Cloud is . Squall is not that much of an emo actually; I would describe it as ‘depth’ instead, simply because of his past; there are reasons he was speaking the way he did and becoming a loner who found it hard to trust in everyone. I find him unlike the other characters in FFVIII who most of were so annoying. I am not actually in the mood to write long paragraphs comparing between the two of them, but over all I find Squall better.

I didn't say emo I said angsty...and I also said that neither of them would win. Anyways; no character is perfect, i don't want to say "like no human is perfect" since those characters are fictional and are not real. I will not start an argument about who is annoying and who is not about characters other than Squall and Cloud. Cloud can be somewhat an emo, but Squall can't because of his past, you said you didn't read the entire dialogue; read it and you will understand. Tifa; you are in the world of fantasy; saving the world must be done by a teenage boy or bunch or teenagers, or cartoons in the case of Kingdom Hearts, there is a reason for it. We are not speaking of the real world. However; standing on the side of evil... well it's ... . Liking evil characters is a different thing, they can be liked for being well-developed with a deep story. That deep story in my opinion in the case of Cloud and Squall is something Squall has more than Cloud, not saying that Cloud don't have it, just Squall has it more.
