Chrome
google chrome released today.
http://www.google.com/chrome
giving it a test run, its interesting.
its faster than opera, and a much cleaner UI than IE.
but without addons i will stick with Firefox.
[edit] ok its REALLY fast[Faster than firefox, opera, and safari fast], but it is having problems with posting on this website so it has to go until they issue a patch.

holy bejezus!
http://news.cnet.com/8301-1001_3-10030888-92.html?part=rss
somewhere in the range of 8 times as fast in rendering pages in Java.
i know this thing is fast, but Christ that is FAST
bugs are abound though: it crashed (ironically) while loading Gmail for me, inputting text is still a sore problem. and it refused to install on my fathers computer.
i did the test on my computer for Opera, it scored 269 (firefox 214) and chrome 1813
now the test is provided by google so it could (and probably is) biased. and render speed is different than getting your pages faster.
i think, if they get the odd crashes worked out i will use it regualarly for my quick and dirty online uses such as posting in forums quickly, checking facebook, looking at my email. and leave the longer browsing needs such as research, entertainment, and downloads to firefox.

Yeah it sounds awesome but I'll wait cause some sites don't support it yet (though it won't take long)

dont joke, at their rate they will.
the problem i will have then is that it will be good. but i will feel quite odd using it.
google is pretty much the biggest advertisement company, it feels wrong using their browser, but using an operating system would feel even stranger.
mozilla is taking Chrome as a threat, and google is saying that mozilla can take their work on chrome and put it in firefox. hell google is still providing 85% of mozilla's budget. i dont think google thinks of firefox the same way mozilla consiters chrome.

well... the biggest complaints im hearing about chrome is a lack of plugins/extentions
but it seems like that would be an obvious thing for them to add down the road.

Yeah you really can't complain about lack of plug-ins and it not being supported because its still a new browser I'll bet Firefox was the same way when it first came out

It does seem to be faster especially with the tabs which is one of their key points. I am surprised the Google toolbar isn't built in already such as spell checker and Pagerank detector. Is it me or is the chrome design not so good on the eyes? The bright colors with an all white background and non-matching url font is kinda intense. It would be great if they add a "remove this site" button on the history page so you can easily remove sites one by one. Hopefully they will make changes on another release.
I hope FireFox takes the idea of displaying your site history with thumbnails when opening a new tab instead of just displaying a blank page that is a good idea. There may be an addon for that already though since there are so many for Firefox. I like how Chrome managed the download section as well. I noticed that my mouse wheel button doesn't work in Chrome and when I try to edit a post the text is overwritten instead of inserted. The Developer section under Tools is nice. Overall I like it

yah the whole overwritten thing is a bug, its with all forms but the strange thing is it just looks like its overwriting it but it is actually just not updating the location of the following text.
its still there and you can see it when you click off of the box.
the most impressive feature of chrome i find is the tabs. each one is a seperate process and if one crashes the whole thing doesnt come falling down. or if a page locks up you can open up the task manager (in chrome, right click on the title bar) and shut it down individually. both of these are a feature that firefox cant have with simple addons.
almost everything else can be found in some form with addons.

They say that you can open up files on your own PC from Chrome (which is actually the main reason I still use IE) since I like being able to call up local files and folders from my browser menu. I cannot seem to find that option in Chrome but I haven't had much time to fool around with it.

Chrome is a security nightmare, indexes your bank accounts
Can a browser’s search function work too well? After playing around with Google’s brand new Chrome browser, we’ve discovered that its history search box will fetch all types of data - even text from HTTPS-protected financial sites like Washington Mutual and Capital One. With a few utterly simple keywords like balance, account and Sept., everything from balance information, account numbers and even how much you spent at Costco can be pulled up. |
