Cheap gaming computer Build

since there are a lot of people with old computers, and there are alot of modern games now adays. i think i will compile a parts list that will play the modern games, and i will challenge myself to make it as cheap as possible. i'm doing this for a friend, and thought "Hey, would be good to post online so others can get a powerful system for cheap homemade"

OK.
this gaming rig can handle quite a bit, its a mini-beast by many standards, while its more than i was aiming for, its a very good bang for the buck.

WHATS IN IT:
Intel Core 2 Duo E6320
nVidia Geforce 8600GTS 256mb GDDR3 DirectX10 Graphics Card
ABIT IB9 LGA 775 Intel P965 Motherboard
2GB DDR2 800mhz Ram
250gb SATA 3.0gbps Harddrive (yah 250gb is small now, but still fine, plus its fast)
500w ATX Power supply (good reviews, and more than enough power)
18x DvD Burner
COOLMAX black case

shipped to US $730.51
then $80 in rebates so $650.51

now this doesn't include an OS, and it doesn't include any accessories (like keyboard or mouse). the parts are all low power and you could probably get away with a 400w power supply. since they use less energy, they will also be quieter. (exception with the dvd drive, which is always apparently the same volume on most drives...)
add $118 for Vista Premium OEM, i wouldn't recommend vista, but this system is DX10 compatible.
even though you probably have XP already. $115 for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005
or if you like hacking $00.0 for Ubuntu 7.04

if you do go with XP. it has to be Professional or Media center edition. XP Home is NOT dual-core compatible, and you would be losing half the processing power.

if you DO have a little more money to spend, i would recommend upgrading the case. its a good balance.. but more on the flimsy side and recommended to not be moved.

Another recommended upgrade would be the Motherboard. after rebate its $65, and the next step up is really $160, but that step up will give you better performance, SLI (multiple video cards), more compatibility for future hardware upgrades (like quad core) and overall worth the money, the motherboard is the most important part of your system. getting a good motherboard can make all the difference.

I can safely guarantee that this system setup WILL play:
Starcraft 2 (even if the game has massive requirements, this system will play it)
F.E.A.R.
World of Warcraft (with maxed out settings. maybe even 2x AA)
Crysis (no idea, but my guess is medium settings.)
Halflife 2 (on near maximum settings, either HDR or 4xAA, both would start causing trouble, this includes most source based games)
Oblivion (near max setting. but still really good)

it actually does seem pretty cheap for what you get, but like you said the vista and xp might give a problem, basicly becaue i think windows is too expensive to actually buy but you need vista for DirectX 10

did you figure out how DirectX9 games actually react on directX 10?

yes... poorly.. for now.

video drivers are near worthless.

vista may be viable in 1 year, probably equal on features and bugs as XP in maybe 2 years, but as of now its still harsh ground.

it really is cheap. effectively $650 for a comp that you can brag about to your friends.

i actually saw in my fry's ad that they had a CPU/Motherboard combo that had a good motherboard with SLI and a Core 2 Duo E6400 processor, for about $230 which is about $10 more than what is in my deal above, and would be much prefered. Moral of the story: Check your local advertisements.

SLi is great for the 8600's. mainly because the 8000 series gets a 70% preformance boost with another card. and you can cheaply upgrade your video settings by just getting another card of the same model.

Hey thanks that's really good Thor. I might have to update mine even though it will only be for one game lol.
At the moment the only game I play is Guild Wars and that works fine, but it's getting old now lol.
