Cancer...
So I've known about this for a while now, and to get it out of the way I do not have cancer, but my very good friend's father does, and supposedly in about 3-4 weeks he'll slip into a coma... He actually diagnosed himself before major symptoms even appeared, though people started to notice that he was acting different.
I just talked to him today, through the wonders of Skype (<--- Awesome by the way), and he doesn't even seem sick, he seems like that guy that I sat down to dinner with on numerous occasions!
He has a cloud style of cancer in his left hemisphere that is slowly making it's way to the right hemisphere... He had surgery to remove the cancer and was on kemo and experimental protein inhibitors (only the 26th patient to try it)... He will eventually die, but I mean it just doesn't make sense.........
and the sad part(on me) is I don't believe that cancer will ever truly be cured, maybe forms of cancer, but not cancer as a whole...
I dunno... I...

seriously, cancer is a huge piece of $hit.
and it seems so previlent now too which is even worse. I think we could make progress with it but its always going to be "if you catch it early you might have a chance" situation, so until we develope better tests... its not going to matter much. my best wishes for your friends father. It seems he's come to some sort of peace and thats all you can really hope for.

I am so sorry to hear about your friend’s father…
I came to think that the ideas they already have concerning the treatment could be flawed or maybe there are some missing pieces which they are blind to see. I don’t know. Chemotherapy and radiation treatments are “supposed” to be the best treatments beside surgery, but those treatments are worse and more painful than the disease itself.

...I think more priority would be put on cancer that resulted from natural factors such as the sun...
...those other things like chemicals, cell phones (maybe) etc. would simply be improved so that they don't easily lead to cancer...
...cancer is a very annoying condition to research, just like the swine flu as there's no one definite form of it...

The problem with cancer is that cancerous cells are based on mutations- therefore there is always a chance that cancerous cells will survive any type of treatment.

It is a problem indeed. I may be understanding what you are going through at the moment Mabus. My friend died of liver cancer as well, to him it was more of a suffering rather than the last days of his life. I wish it would just go away, or a way could be found to cure it, but yeah.. we all know that might be almost impossible for the next few years. Hell, we might not even live to see cancer cured.. but it doesn't really matter, because cancer always comes back. Doesn't matter how they cure it, what they do to it, how they test on it, as they do these days.. it's still there and it doesn't escape our daily lives. It might be a relative, it might be a friend from school, it might be a random neighbor, or the worst part, it may be even you.
You know, I wish cancer was just wiped off the history's surface, but at the same time I know, it is impossible. All there is to do is keep up the hope, and believe. After all, death is inevitable and we all die someday, sometime.. but belief is what keeps humanity going, and I think we should all believe that cancer can be fought back someday..
To those who died of cancer and other horrible diseases, I give a 1 minute of silence and honoring...

Like cable said, cancer is just mutations of cells (i.e. DNA not replicating correctly due to UVA & UVB damage, radiation (alpha, beta and gamma) chemicals, I'm sure wireless internet does * to us we don't know about)
There are so many signals passing through your body everyday (cell phone, radio, etc) that I'm sure it plays a part in the recent years (I believe I read that cancer is being more common place in modern times as opposed to in earlier history)!
Bah if we as humanity would work together I'm sure lots of modern and old problems could be solved! But I would be shocked if that ever came about, which makes me slightly depressed...

Of course cancer will never be cured! It's the biggest money maker on the planet. Why would you cure a cash cow of that magnitude? It's the exact same reason why the majority of medications in society treat symptoms and not diseases... because if you cure the disease you stop getting paid.
The worst part is, I believe the cure's already been found... Cancer research on sharks was prevalent a few years back once scientists discovered that sharks cannot contract cancer... and all of a sudden the research stopped... mum's the word... that's it... no conclusion was even stated... the research just stopped...

...there is a way to treat some cancers...research unicelluar organisms that target rapidly dividing cells...however...your stomach won't like it very much...

Yeah that can be true, there are many other conspiracy theories that assume that there is some healing cure for cancer which is being concealed, but let’s not forget that those thousands of doctors and scientists along with their families are endangered by cancer at the same rate as the rest of the world, and it’s impossible that all of those are selfish greedy people whom their silence can be bribed with money. People start making all kinds of assumptions when they lose hope in something, only to make themselves feel better, this is one of the cases.
The main problem with cancer is that it’s an uncontrollable cell growth, and there is a mysterious enzyme which exists yet not activated in the normal body cells, but in cancer cells it’s activated and contributes in cells’ division. Scientists were still unable to identify this enzyme and understand its mechanism the last time I checked. And I think there are other enzymes and stuff that scientists don’t know about yet, they should try looking at the whole disease from a different angle.

NIH, where all cures developed in the US come from, is 100% government controlled and funded. I'm willing to bet it's a similar situation around the globe.

...um, you can't cure desieses because there's not "medication" to eliminate completely all the pathogens in your body...if you're thinking antibiotics...the pathogens would just evolve to become immune to it...now what?
...the only ways we could kill for example, a virus...is simply helping the immune system...
...either giving it a vaccine or injecting interfereons...in no way do we actually have anything that could kill only the virus...

I don't believe the cure for cancer lies in "killing" it... only thing I could see is making humans immune to it through gene manipulation and dna alteration... Then we're only two steps away from super babies and my master plan will be complete.... yessss..... >.> <.<

...serious discussion...
...you cannot be immune to cancer...that means that you're immune to your own cells...which is impossible...
...however...if there is a way to mkae the immune system recognise cancer cells and destroy them, we would have a chance...on the downside...this increase in "strictness" would cause the rejection of any organ implants and slow down if not stop the process of evolution since the immune system would have to kill any "new" cells...
