Booyah my Dream PC
i finally completed my Dream PC:
Motherboard: Asus P5W DH Deluxe (this is the VERY BEST motherboard you can buy, i have not seen any other that tops this one)
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 (two 2.4ghz processors, 4mb L2 cache, OK its not a quadcore CPU, but this baby is fast AND affoardable)
Video Card: ATi x1900xtx (512mb GDDR3)
Memory: 2gb DDR2 PC6400 OCZ Titanium Rev2 (4-4-4-15-5)
Monitor: Dell 2007WFP (1680x1050 resolution, 8ms average response time (16ms Black to white, 8ms Black to Grey))
it is a gaming best, and looking at it, its about as powerful as the new Next-Gen consoles. (about as powerful, my video card is better than the one in the PS3, but not nearly as good as the one in the 360. the processors in both of the consoles still are very badass compared to mine)
and when you play Halflife 2 on ABSOLUTE maximum settings (x6AA, AFx16, HDR Enabled) and at 1680x1050, it looks BETTER than many next-gen games (Gears of war excluded)
i've achieved bliss.. now i will not upgrade it for two years as i will now save up for an apartment. (though if i get the 30in LCD then i wont have to buy a TV.. i can just use it... hrmmm)
to celebrate this occasion, i got a new computer case, a free computer case... a free $75 computer case.

Lets add up how much a cool computer costs:
CPU: $300
Ram: $340
Video: $270
Harddrives: $160
Motherboard: $230
Monitor: $400
Speakers: Free (Birthday)
Soundcard: Free (christmas, last year)
Keyboard and Mouse: $100
DvD Drive: Free (cant remember how, maybe i stole it )
Case: Free (damaged, but just has a scar. so its free)
Headphones: Free (christmas)
Printer: Free (Christmas)
i think thats everything
TOTAL:
$1,800
wow.... thats alot. without christmas and my birthday its new total is:
Speakers: $300
Soundcard: $100
DvD DRive: $30
Headphones: $70
Printer: $90
Case: $80
Sub Total: $670
New TOTAL: $2,470
holy S thats allot of cash to put into a computer.
the reason why i'm done upgrading, and there are still parts that are better than mine (quad core, GeForce 8800) or parts that i don't have at all (PhysX card, Dedicated Network Card) are because those upgrades are a waste of money.
so is my $2,500 computer better than a $600 or $400 console? let me show you how much i would have to spend to upgrade my computer to be better than the consoles:
To be better than the PS3:
+Intel Core 2 Quad: $900
to be better than the 360:
+PhyisX card: $300
+GeForce 6600GS: $600
the reason im adding the Physics card is because my CPU is damn close to the power of a 360, but giving my computer a PhysX processor will make it equal as a single 360 processor is almost always dedicated to PhysX itself. and the reason i dont need a new video card is because the video card in the PS3 is a GeForce 7800GT, which is actually a lower end video card (compared to my x1900xtx) so thusly all i have to do is match the Processor.
so a $900 upgrade to be better than the current consoles.

hmmm....that does sound good but your quad core is actually lower end then you think...until more support comes out for it programs and games will not make use of the extra 2 cores. Not all programs and games out there make use of dual core processors.... so I wouldn't get quad core till the support for them increase. I would want to limit a game by setting the affinity to only use 2/4 cores do it can acutally use te most core possible....if this makes any sense at all....

er, i dont have a quad-core, i have a Core 2 Duo E6600
and yes, i understand what you are saying, i have professed that actuallity many times to many people.
that argument does hold water, and many, MANY people will see no advantage to quad-core.. EXCEPT if you have the following:
-Quad SLI/Quad Crossfire
-Multiple games running at the same time
-a game that supports proper game threading (Halflife 2 comes to mind, but that game is kinda old and runs great on a dual-core as well)
-Running a website/server
-Vista (no im kidding
Intel has stated that the magic number of cores in a desktop computer will be 16, and from there they will try to focus on another aspect of improving hardware speed and compatability and preformance rather than # of processors. (though servers on the other hand have no limit at all since the extra cores WILL be used)

Looking at that cost total makes me realize just how much more affordable computer tech has become over the past few years. It's still quite expensive, of course, but compared to costs of ten years ago, it's amazing.
I bought my first PC 10 years ago and it was about $3000, but it doesn't even begin to compare to the power of the stuff you've got listed there. If all that existed then, it would have been at least double the price.

nice machine, wish mine was half as fast. It only has an amd 2800, 2gb 2700ddr memory, and a 200gb hard drive. It doesn't run very fast as it use too though.

whats your video card?
what kinds of games are you playing?
thats a freaking lot of memory for that speed!
if you dont play too many games, then Linux might be a solution for your slowness, as it would run almost as fast as mine on the desktop if you had linux.
if you play one or two games i can check up on them for you and see if they are linux compatable.
but if you have an ATi card, its a nogo for now, ATi linux drivers dont have 3d support. yet.
